Nice thread idea. Interesting too, because this is my first Thanksgiving experience. I am looking forward to it of course, but am curious if this is solely a 'food fest', somewhat like Christmas, or is there more to it?

For my family, it's really about sitting down and breaking bread together. It's my favorite holiday of the year because everybody's focused on the meal sharing. :star: It's best when the whole family gets involved with the preparation...not just the mom's.

Thanks for some good ideas! Steve, I think I saw a sweet potato casserole recipe very similar to that on Kraftfoods.com and it looked really good to me. (BTW, if you visit that site...you can sign up for a free magazine..comes every couple/few months, and has some really good meal ideas/recipes in it! You can also choose at the same time whether or not you want to receive emails from them.) I agree with you though, Cerise....I don't want marshmellows on my potatoes..sweet or not!

Your recipe sounds really good Mary, except I don't really care for the cornbread type stuffing...I bet someone will make good use of it though!! Thanks for posting everyone!..and sorry you won't be with D this year Lisa...he proposed on Thanksgiving didn't he? At least it should be the last apart.

Keep 'em coming everyone! :) M.

Luz, yes...do have Gary share some of his best recipes!

Does anyone have a really yummy apple crisp recipe? Now that I've typed that, I think my mom has one...I know it's not hard...flour, cinnimon (well, the one I like) oats, etc...but I'm not sure how much of each. I'd like to make some of that as well.

About the dressing...yeah..I have to admit I LOVE Stovetop...I'm a chicken Stovetop dressing kinda girl, but I want to try something I actually made myself this year. I might have some Stovetop on hand though...just in case it doesn't work out. ;) I haven't decided yet...who knows...I may just make everything else and say forget it...we're havin' the boxed dressing!!

Caladan..thanks for that *super* simple cran. relish thing...that would be great on Turkey it sounds like! Think I'll try that for sure....

Edited: the 'puter changed the order around of everything I posted...weird!! I'm sure you can figure it out, but still...crazy!

I am still amazed at how popular mashed potato out of a box is here in the US. Nothing beats good ole mashed potato the old fashioned way. When I first arrived here I was making one of my first meals and I was mashing up the potatoes when hubby asks 'what am I doing' lol ummmmm der, I'm doing mashed potatos. 'We have ours out of the box, its so much easier'. I have tried it since....once bad.gif

I think it was one of us men who invented mashed potatoes in a box. It's a man thing. :P

A lot of the stuffings I've seen have apple in them...the one on Kraft foods does I think...

Marilyn, I make my potatoes like you do...no out of a box, esp. for Thanksgiving! (I know, everyone would say that about the stuffing!! I do want to try a kind not out of the box too as a backup..maybe a sausage stuffing I've been reading about..that sounds kind of good. Not sure yet... )

I'm really hungry now... :P M.

Never done the mashed potatoes in a box thing. A little tip from my grandmother, heat your milk up first it makes for smoother potatoes. Evaporated milk or half and half is nice in them as well.

For stuffing here at home I often cheat with Stove top. I typically sautee some onions celery and walnuts in the saucepan before making it. I have also cooked it in the bird and added the same ingredients along with apples and pears. Yummy. Due to the lack of Stove top in England I made a stuffing and used a bit of orange juice, some canned pears and juice off of them along with apples, onions and celery and rolled it inside my pork roast. I then drizzled a mixture of the juices along with some broth on top of the roast, it got rave reviews from my lil British family.

In Brasil, mashed potatoes in a box is banned really. Everyone makes the real deal with butter, milk, salt and pepper.
