Hi, everyone...

We normally go to my mom/dads for Thanksgiving, but this year I want them to come to our house. Sooooooooooooo, I've been scouring the Internet the last hour or so for some good recipes...I have found some, but then I started thinking...I'm sure most of you have a couple of favorites at your house. If you would share them, that would be great....tried and true is always best ya know! I know it's a little bit early, but it's almost here...and I need to plan what to buy, etc.

My mom will bring pumpkin pies...I can make the pie just fine, but I've never been great with making the crusts, and she's a pro. I don't normally like the premade kind....esp. compared to hers! Other than that, some sort of sweet potato dish, stuffing, cranberry sauce, some sort of veg (the green bean cass. thing always looks good but I hate mushrooms...even soup...I guess I could use another type of soup in there.)

I don't know...want to do most of the 'typical' fare, but looking for some old favorites you may have too. Thanks!! :) M.

PS...I've just realized I've been writing a lot about food lately! I appreciated all the suggestions in the other thread, and *am* going to try a lot of them..have implemeted a few easy things so far like trying to always cook with spray instead of butter, not so much butter, if any, in cooking, etc. Anyway...Thanksgiving! One day of the year most people don't worry too much about it! :P

Here is an attempt at my cornbread dressing recipe. LOL I am bad about cooking and not using a recipe and go by feel on alot of my dishes. Only baked pies, cakes, etc do I use recipes.

I make a large pan of cornbread and let it cool.

Cornbread

2 Cups of Martha White Self Rising Corn Meal Mix

1 1/3 cups Buttermilk

1 beaten egg

1/4 cup of oil or melted shortening

Heat oven to 450 degrees and add oil/shortening to 9" skillet and heat in oven. In large bowl mix all other ingredients and then pour batter in hot oiled pan. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until done.

Mary's Cornbread Dressing

Make cornbread recipe above and cool.

Take a small cooking hen and boil in pan with boullion and onions, celery, salt and pepper. Take out of pan and cool until you can pull the meat from the carcass.

Take in a non stick skilled 4 ribs of celery and one large onion and saute in 3 tablespoons of margarine and season with salt and pepper to taste. Let cool until you can mix with hands.

Now take the cornbread, chicken meat and veggies and put in large mixing bowl.

Take the cooled liquid from cooking your chicken and use it to mix into the dry ingredients until it is damp but not too wet. I also add about 1/2 cup of chopped pecans to the mixture. Poultry seasonings and sage to taste and then bake in the oven until warmed thru and thru. You can make it the day before and then put it in the oven about 45 minutes before you wish to serve and it will be reheated and ready for serving.

I save the remaining stock from cooking the chicken and make homemade gravy with the turkey drippings and any leftover chicken meat can be used in a casserole or for chicken tacos or roll ups.

Bon Apetite

Does anyone have a really really tasty recipe for sweet potato pie. I think you guys call them yams too. I am looking for a recipe that has the sweet potato in slices, not mash. Thanking you kindly :)

Not much of a recipe but several years ago I bought a box of Louisiana Yams at Costco and I followed the tip on the box that said to butter the skins before baking them and the skins will come off really easy. Haven't seen if they're selling 'em this year though.

I used them for making sweet potato casserole - butter, nutmeg, orange juice and caro syrup. Mash and mix. Top with mini-marshmallows.....mmmmmmmmmm...delicious!

Ooh, Steven. Too sweet!

Cranberries.

Orange zest.

Boil the hell out of it.

Excellent cranberry relish.

Nice thread idea. Interesting too, because this is my first Thanksgiving experience. I am looking forward to it of course, but am curious if this is solely a 'food fest', somewhat like Christmas, or is there more to it?

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

American Thanksgiving.

It's mostly a day to have a feast with family. But it's a huge production; the Wednesday before is traditionally the biggest travel day of the year as everyone goes home to their relatives or hosts them.

I bake my yams or sweet potatoes (usually yams) like a baked potato (wrap in foil and bake; can be done a couple of days ahead of the day). Then they can be sliced or cubed and served with butter and a little brown sugar. (I don't put marshmallows on my veggies...*shudder* :P )

So not quite a pie but definitely tasty. :)

My Mom's dressing is super easy. Quantities vary based on the size of the bird (if you make too much, just bake it separately).

  • bread cubes (stale bread broken up)
  • melted butter to cover (enough to make everything stick together)
  • sage (to taste)
  • diced onion
  • raisins

Mix all and stuff into the bird. Bake. :)

Electricity is really just organized lightning.

Pretty much a food fest with those you love. Much better than Christmas in my opinion.

Michelle you could do a corn pudding. I make mine off the top of my head but can give you a quick run down then see if you can find one online similar.

Melt 1/2 stick of butter in an oven proof dish

In a bowl mix 1 can of corn (drained) 2tbls of flour, 1/4 cup of sugar, 2 large eggs, a cup of milk, salt and pepper to taste.

pour the mixture into the dish with the melted butter place the dish inside a cake pan with about an inch of water and bake it somewhere around 45 minutes to an hour in a 350 degree oven.
