The photo of the meat hanging in the 95 degree weather could've been taken here. It always grosses me out when we go to the market and all the meats are covered in flies. I have to hold my breath walking through that part. wacko.gif And the fact that the men handling the meat don't even use plastic gloves or anything. Urrggh.

Why does everything have eyeballs? I don't want my food staring at me while I eat it!!! I know where it comes from, I know how it gets to my plate, it's okay, I don't need it STARING at me! EEK!

I wouldn't touch that meat with a 10 foot pole. Fruit looks good though :)

I cheated and googled. It's not the most unusual thing to eat but it looks icky. I've heard of similar dipped in chocolate being a delicacy. Not a fan of eating things I would normally squish or avoid. LOL

Yep, they're grasshoppers! The legs and wings are removed, and then they are seasoned and fried. It's a labor-intensive process, as you might imagine, so they're quite pricey and considered a huge delicacy. My husband loves them; I'll tolerate them but they're not my favorite (although maybe I'm just still in the process of acquiring the taste?). I don't find the idea any more disturbing than shrimp or lobsters, but they have an unusual flavor that I'm not quite used to.

I got here too late to throw in my guess, but I recognized them. As a kid here in the USA we ate raw grasshoppers. We pulled the head, wings and legs off and just ate them. They were a bit strange but tasty. As an adult, I've never tried raw grasshopper though. I wonder if I could get myself to eat them now? We have lots of weird eating habits right in the USA, but they seem to be fading with each generation. I remember my grandparents eating things when I was a little kid that totally grossed me out. But for the life of me, I can't recall what they were now.

Seafood is expensive here. My wife is always complaining we don't eat it enough. But that's just how it is when you live over a thousand miles from an ocean. I think our main protein source is pork in my house. Used to be beef before my wife arrived, but she prefers pork and the way she cooks it, I'm plenty happy. I do eat seafood a lot more often than before to. Chicken is about the only thing I eat at about the same amount. My wife marinates the squid before she stuffs and grills it.

My wife says she doesn't know the recipe, she just throws it together. I prompted her and got it though.

Marinated the mantles in soy sauce, vinegar, lemon, salt and pepper, and special spicey hot Filipino vinegar. stuffed with green onions, red bell peppers, tomatoes, and onions. Hold the mantel shut with a kabob stick. Grill on low heat, turning often so it doesn't get rubbery. Baste while grilling with the marinade.

She also cuts all the vegetables so they're the length if the squid. and cuts a couple slices in the mantle bodies.
