Looks good or not, just eat it.....

Auch, a lot of that stuff looks like vomit. Here is a tip: All of the stuff you said made you sick looks like puke. Don't eat pukey looking things in a nasty puke sauce.

What is that thing above? A rodent? A dog? A tiny long-snouted pig?

Actually, I think almost all of it looked really good. blink.gif The only things I might not be able to brave would be the octopus looking thing and what looks like fix parts covered in brown sauce. I'm jealous. I want to go eat exotic things in Asia. crying.gif

I love baby pig! Stuff them full of lemon grass and roast until the skin is crispy. And you got the best part there to, the head!

Your opening picture was our dinner last night. Lechon, left over from our anniversary party on October 15th. I cut the left overs up, we really got way too big of a pig, and froze it. Last night we ate up the last of it. It took a few tried to find out how best to get the skin crispy again. Turns out a quick deep fry worked best.

That fruit you had a picture of, looks like a relative of jack fruit.

And the picture of the dish washing, this is exactly the type of thing you have to look out for over there. Washed in dirty water from an unsafe tap, using little of no soap, then food or drink getting dumped on and served while still wet, because they only have enough dishes for half their patrons to eat at one time. Nasty little bacteria, protozoans and parasites go right in while while you're eating or drinking from places like that. Doesn't mean you don't eat there, it just means you make sure the dishes they're using have been dried first to reduce the risk.

What!? You don't have a servant with a banana leaf waving away the flies? How barbaric!

Washing dishes at your table in unsafe water only lets you make sure the dishes look clean. If you're provided something to wipe and dry them off good after, then you should be fairly safe. I love the open air wet markets in the Philippines. All this fish and meat sitting out with flies trying to land on it and a worker waving a fan over the meat to keep them off. If you look around a bit more though, all over you'll see workers taking a break and the flies have a feast, when they think no customers are looking  My wife likes all her meat and fish cooked well done for good reason. Well except the kinilaw, which is raw fish (sometimes a little pork to) cooked with strong vinegar, not heat.

Btw, I had 2 bowls of rice congee in the past 36 hrs. It's the only nourishment keeping me alive.....

Oh man, you are still suffering then. Hope you get back to normal soon. Did you visit a doctor to see if there's something you need to take? Some of those parasites you can pick up in Asia don't go away on their own.

I haven't gone to a doctor, I figure it's a case of travelers diarrhea. My doc back in the USA gave me a z-pack to travel with. When I feel the need I'll take it for sure.

Trying things is great, don't get me wrong... it's just that all the stuff you said made you sick... looks the same on the plate as how it's going to come out of you... blech

I feel like saucy things sit around after they've been cooked and turn into a petri dish for bacteria.

But, have fun! Eat what you want :)

congee with garlic and chicken buillon cubes should flush out that nasty stuff. Always worked for me. Make sure you use as much garlic as you can handle.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

boy I tell ya Harpa, some of the stuff looks like #######, but is absolutely fabulous (and who am I to judge an entire ethnicity's food culture)......you're right about the petri dish. This whole country is a giant petri dish...

I'm suspecting the ice made with raw water that made sick (among other things). My daughter's Godfather arrived 2 days ago with some Ciprol, better for a lower intestinal infection than the Z pack that I have. So I'll give that a shot.

meanwhile my friend, you keep enjoying the food in NY that we take so much for granted. We truly throw away more than they eat here...
