We just received our 10 yr green card. And soon, this May, we'll be eligible to apply for US Citizenship for the 3 yrs based on the green card anniversary.

My questions are : which is better to get the US Citizenship, the 3 yrs rule vs 5 yrs rule? What are the advantage and disadvantages? Which is easier? And what documents needed?

Please enlighten us since this will be our last hurdle.

Thanks!! :help: :help:

The only difference is the waiting period--if you are still married, then the 3-year rule is in effect. If you aren't, then it is the 5-year rule. If you are married, there is a separate section on the N-400 that has to be filled out about the spouse, but that is it.

Also, read "the guide"--it covers just about everything, and has a great checklist of everything you will need...

You said 'We', I assume you are still married with your spouse..Why would you wait for another 2years when you are eligile to file within the next few months? I suggest you go ahead and get that over with..

Goodluck!

Thanks a lot for your advise. I guess we have to file for the 3 yrs rule. What documents do we need to provide so we can start gathering them? Thanks again! :star: :star:

"Magical" already gave you a link to check...read it. Also, if you go back to the main window of this topic, they have tons of "pinned" information...just read them. Good luck!

I came under fiance visa and got married, then got my Greencard. I was not sure if I wanted to get the US citizenship - I take this very seriously and wanted to be sure I felt like a citizen before applying. I think that I am ready to become a full US citizen. Now, I am beyond the 3 years and the 5 years. Do I still need to add information on my spouse, what is the point?

I am happily married but I want to limit the personal info, since I felt my privacy was quite hurt already with the fiancee visa application...
