I know why they think he's Australian!

Tony and I went car shopping last night and the salesman asked where Tony was from. Tony told him England. The guy said he thought he was Australian. Then the salesman introduced Tony to his co-worker who was from Birmingham. I could barely understand him. That's when it hit me that Tony's accent compared to this guy's was so different. Tony's seemed much slower a bit more understandable ( to me ). Just like in the US, we have different "accents".

When viewed from an American, some Southern Brits may sound Australian to someone not familiar with the British accent at all (possibly through television though). Just thought it was neat to hear another Brit and yet not be able to understand him!

I so know what you mean. My husband is a Brummie by birth, but spent the last twenty years of his UK life in South Yorks, so he has quite a unique accent to say the least. At first, when we started talking, to me, one British Accent was as good as another - my husband used to joke that I thought everyone sounded like Hugh Grant. However, now I'm getting pretty good at "placing" an accent. I know a Londoner from a Northerner from a Midlander, etc. Quite proud of myself I might add. My husband still can't discern a US accent from a Canadian one!!!

That's probably got a lot to do with it as well - the 'English' accent ('cos there's no such thing as a British accent) you hear people talking on American TV shows/in films bears no relation to anything you'd ever hear in real life. What's really odd is when you get British actors doing it... I can just imagine the director yelling at them that they don't sound "British" enough and making them put on this weird accent so that people will know where they're meant to be from.

It's funny.

I'm from London, and have been asked lots of times if I'm Australian, and am also forever being told I sound like I'm from 'up north'. I have no idea why... I think I inadvertently pick up bits of other peoples' accents and then they stick!

2005 - We met

2006 - Filed I-129F

2007 - K-1 issued, moved to US, completed AOS (a busy year, immigration-wise)

2009 - Conditions lifted

2010 - Will be naturalising. Buh-bye, USCIS! smile.png

Tim is well spoken to be from Suffolk. He has a very "Hugh Grant" accent (don't tell him I think this lmao), so far no one has mistaken where he is from.

My crazy mother was going on about this guy from Australia. Tim and I got to meet him and right off the bat Tim ask if he was from South Africa, of course he was and my mother could only laugh and tell of her mistake.

I'm a northern lass and I ALWAYS ALWAYS get asked if I'm Austrailian!!! I guess if you don't speak like Hugh Grant (or the queen!) everyone pretty much assumes you are an Auzzie!!

Roshon is getting real good at knowing the different accents! He still gets Scotish and Irish a little confused with each other

Do you not think we have WAY more accents than here in America??? Ours varies from town to town never mind state to state!!

Funny you should say that. We were talking about that very thing! Because England alone is approximately the size of some of our states. I'd never even thought of that. Still working on sorting the accents myself :P

that's funny because Stewart ALWAYS gets asked if he's English!!!

HAHAHA! Americans just aren't used to accents I don't think! Also his accent is MUCH less than most Aussies i've heard. He's spent the past 5 years travelling, and mostly living in the UK so that MIGHT be why!

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

People always assume David is an Aussie as well, although he has a very definite Eastender accent....

Accent or no accent, he'll always be the only man for me!

8-30-05 Met David at a restaurant in Germany

3-28-06 David 'officially' proposed

4-26-06 I-129F mailed

9-25-06 Interview: APPROVED!

10-16-06 Flt to US, POE Detroit

11-5-06 Married

7-2-07 Green card received

9-12-08 Filed for divorce

12-5-08 Court hearing - divorce final

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

I am from the East of Scotland and I have a very soft Scottish accent and people always ask me where in England I am from..... I think they expect all scottish people to speak like they do in Glasgow or sound like sean conarry....

When you think Scotland is smaller than Maine I am amazed at the diffrent accents we have in Scotland....

My friend is from Fife and has a wonderful lilting accent. She lives in Australia now...could cause problems if she came to the USA....imagine the confusion!
