SSN problem with work

I'm wait to start a new job and the company said my SSN Card is not sufficient and I need a letter from the SS office.

This is what they asked for.

"I got word back from HR that you would need to go get a verification letter for the social security office. This is what she said “The verification letter will have the social security number and his name like it is on his card” so if you can take care of that and let me know we should be ready to move forward shortly after with the next step in the process. We are trying to expedite this so you get started soon for all parties involved."

I don't understand and neither does the manager. I thought the SS office wouldn't print anything with your number on it.

Has anyone had this issue?

I haven't lost my card though? They photocopied my card when I was interviewed.

Does your card have line valid for work with authorization or something like that?

Yes it does, they have also seen and copied my EAD card.

I am not sure what they are asking is legal... They can't tell you what documents to submit, as long as you have a useable combination.

On the other hand, maybe they are having trouble verifying the SSN, and are just asking for some help. If all you have to do is go the SSA, I just might do it. If the SSA can't produce such a letter, then I'd print out the I-9 and show them the instructions.

Google "I-9 form" and read everything thoroughly. Twice. If you do that, you'll be able to explain to me what meaning the documents in List A, List B, and List C have without stumbling or breaking a sweat. If you can explain this to me, you can also explain that to the HR department, pointing out that what they are asking you to do is illegal. I would do that very politely though, as, after all, you want the job.

Alternatively, you could comply with them and once you have the job, file a formal complaint against the offender, making sure he or she goes to hell.
