I will always be Swedish, after spending almost 35 years there its hard to be anything else lol. But with that said I do feel right at home here in AK!

My son is another story, when we moved over here last year in July, he hardly spoke any English. Now he has issues speaking Swedish! He still understands it since I speak to him in Swedish all the time but he has a hard time finding the Swedish words. I do think and hope that it will all fall back into place when we go back for a visit this summer, but I fear that over time his Swedish will fade and that makes me kinda sad. I don't want him to lose his Swedish side....

Embrace the land you call home like its your own. But keep your heritage alive in your family and in your heart.

So I believe that becoming a US citizen, wont take away from my Greek heritage or from the Aussie land that raised me,biggrin.gif

I agree with the above wholeheartedly. Nigeria is still a developing nation with so many negatives due to actions of some individuals, yet there are things I love about that land that America cannot take away from me. Sometimes when i point out faults in my birth country, friends and family think I sound snobbish because I have seen greener pastures. My reply is that "America has given me opportunities that I would not have had if I had remained in my birth country". For that, I am eternally grateful. It has become my home now and i shall contribute what I can to make it progress but it will never take away my heritage also.

GOD has been WONDERFUL!!!

My hubby isn't on the forum so I can't speak for him, but just yesterday we were talking about Prishtina. He showed me a picture of the giant swimming pool at Germija Park. They had filled it and it was beautiful, like a man-made lake. It was empty both times I was there in Kosovo. Suddenly I started really missing Prishtina, and I'm the US citizen. I told my hubby this, and he said he misses it, too, but said he's ok. I miss walking together to buy yummy coffee and burek. I am rarely happy with the fast food we have here in the USA, so I cook a lot. And we take lots of walks together. Hubby Skypes with family every day. His little niece is so cute. She reaches out to the computer and tries to play with his keys when he dangles them in front of the camera. Lucky girl, she is learning to speak Albanian. When I try I sound like a box of rocks rofl.gif

  • 4 months later...

I sure do feel the same way. I have been in the U.S. since 2005 and feel like I don't belong to Canada or here. I feel somehow like I betrayed who I am. I choose not to become an American citizen because I am who I am. I was born a Canadian I will always be a Canadian. I never thought I was a patriotic kind of person until I left Canada. Now I am in tears when I hear our anthem! I live in Arizona now, where using oven mitts to steer the car in the summer is a good idea! Lol

Not a citizen yet, feel lonely for Canada some days. Though I am lucky to have moved to Mass, it feels more like a HUGE New Brunswick, and living right on the border of NH, that's REALLY like New Brunswick...I think being able to stay on the East Coast made the transition easier for me, and being only a 7 hr drive from "home" helps as well. Visited Salem MA with ex hubby aboot 6 yrs ago, and knew I would live here someday..(not realizing the circumstances why I would at that time) but felt at HOME there. Now here I am living 30 minutes away from Salem MA!!! Weird!!!!
