Renewing driver's license during ROC

How do you do this? My driver's license expires when my green card does.

If I take NOA + gc to renew it, will I get a license that's only valid for the year extension that the NA grants me?

When do I do if they won't accept NOA when I renew my driver's license? It takes almost a year to process the RoC. I can't drive on an expired license for almost a year!

Presumably someone here has been through this.

Married since 03/02/2011, AOS from F-1 visa, green card granted 05/24/2011.
Blessed with a healthy baby boy, 08/19/2011! We get to keep our family together! Thank you! smile.png

You need to check with the DMV of your state. Each state has their own rules. You will be able to renew with the extension letter, but one year or more, I don't know. Google DMV and your state.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

As I said in your other post about this you need to call or go down to the DMV to find out what they do. Like harpa said as well, only the DMV can answer your questions accurately and correctly.

Your I-129f was approved in 5 days from your NOA1 date.

Your interview took 67 days from your I-129F NOA1 date.

AOS was approved in 2 months and 8 days without interview.

ROC was approved in 3 months and 2 days without interview.

You should be alright with the extension letter, get your license renewed for the year, and if you don't get your green card by then, then worry about it then,no use getting upset about something that hasn't happened yet..

I did google it for my state. The 52 first results all point to various topics on VisaJourney. People appear to have had massively different experiences with the DMV when they call or go there in person, even varying in their own state. There's nothing on Pennsylvania DMV's website about this kind of situation.

I guess I'll take my NOA, and if that doesn't work I'll keep trying different DMV offices around the state until I find one where they'll renew it.

All the best and please share your success (I am guessing that you would be) for others in PA to be benefitted.

I've lived in PA, most of places don't deal with immigrants all that much, so they have no idea what to do.

Go to the DMV, if you are turned away - talk to a supervisor. Your DL should be extended for the duration of your extension letter.

You have heard of cases where neurosurgeons had to remove half of the brain of human beings as it was basically dead, rotting away. Most of the people to whom this happened work for the DMV offices after recovery. (Those people whose entire brain was removed work for the SSA.)

What that means is that they have no clue about their job. They know nothing. They are drones stupid as a piece of driftwood, and if anything comes their way that they haven't done before, they fail miserably and consequently they give you a wrong information. What does that mean for you?

It means that you have to be informed. You need to know more than the people whose job it is to know this sh*t. So let me help you with your homework.

You are a lawful permanent resident, a.k.a. a Green Card holder. The moment you follow the process outlined by the United States government to extend your current, 2-year Green Card, you are in a processing pattern that due to bureaucratic backlog can take up to 1 year. For that reason, you received a letter from said United States government that extends your current Green Card for another year. Since you are dealing with the DMV, explain it as having a 2013 sticker on a license plate, and now you have a letter from the United States government that works like a 2014 sticker, just that you didn't get a sticker but a piece of paper like a temporary registration that is attached to the windshield of a car.

If the obese drone in the chair doesn't understand this, asks politely for the office manager and start over. Most likely you will only get a new driver's license for 1 year. Yep, sucks, by they are only giving you a license valid for as long as your lawful presence in the U.S. is verified. Once you have your new Green Card and your 1-year license is about to expire, pay up again and get a new driver's license. And round and round go the horsies on the merry-go-round.

Welcome to America.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

LOL I feel your description is a bit harsh though...but..haha! Anyway, I don't know how this happened with me (or maybe it varies to states, and California does not give a s.h.i.t. when it comes to people being legal or illegal) but I've got my DL when I was 15 (I moved with my family to the US as a kid, I was on J2). Anyway, they never even put any restriction on regarding when my J2 would expire or anything. And ever since, I have changed to H4 (through my parents as H1B) and then F1 and to green card just recently. Throughout all these years, I always just renew my DL online, and they never sent a mail or question online what my status is, or when my visa expires...last time I renewed it was in 2010, and it will expire in 2015. So it's weird, but I guess like others said, it varies from state to state, I guess.

P.S. Time flies so fast and fortunately, I just got approved for the ROC..Its been more than a year now and with my DL expiring, but this time it would be different, I have the 10-year GC in my hand..I've had just renewed my DL 2 days ago and I was given the normal 5 years time frame before it'll expire again!

I guess I got lucky. I am from PA and they gave me a license good for 5 years. It does not expire with my green card

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png
