The reasons don't have a whole lot to do with him being foreign, but him being who he is. He's kind, sweet, and most of all doesn't have these pre-concieved notions of beauty. I'll freely admit, I'm overweight, and most men here in the U.S. won't give me a second look because of it.

What it really comes down to is individuals, since there are good and bad people in every country and culture. So I think anyone here saying things such as "All American [insert gender] are this way..." is completely wrong, since everyone is different. :)

Exactly. My fiance comes from a culture where a lot of men are more immature and less respectful of women than the average American. They live with their parents until marriage, are total mama's boys, and use women shamelessly sometimes. I found a guy who knew what he wanted, is completely independent, career driven but at the same time completely willing to make our relationship as much of a priority (or moreso) as I do.

Not something I would expect in a "Brazilian man"... if people are looking for mates that fit a national mold, they'll probably end up disappointed...

:thumbs: Well said. I don't think it's necessarily bad to make generalizations about cultural characteristics as long as we don't mistake them for fact. Such generalities such as Asian and Jewish families putting an emphasis on education, Hispanic families putting an emphasis on family solidarity, do exist. People from other countries make generalization about Americans as well. In fact Jinky has made some comments about Americans that I actually took offense to because I thought they were unfair and inaccurate, at least when it applied to me. She has some negative perceptions about Americans that she's gotten from relatives that have already immigrated to the states. I don't blame her for having those perceptions but I'm adamant about dispelling them as factual.

Yeah, it's not that generalizations can't be made, it's just that if you're in love with the generalization, you're bound to be disappointed.

Hmm - for fun?

OK - I married an Irishman/Ulsterman 'cause...

... he's too tall to be a leprechaun - I can't find ANY green tights that big......

...the accent is WAY SWEET and SEXY...

...he's actually NOT pastey white....

AND...the Number #1 fun reason I married my foreign man....

...my GAWD I love to hear him laugh!!!!

:lol: Ha this made me laugh out loud!

From my own personal experience, American guys are very nice, fun, generally good-natured, etc, but they take a LONG TIME to grow up and that gets VERY tiresome. Of course there are exceptions, but I have never met any of these exceptions, and even if a guy is nice and fun, there's no future there because being with a 20's-something American guy is like babysitting him until he turns 35.

But the immaturity just extends to the relationship. American guys that I have dated have all been unreliable and childishly selfish when it comes to the relationship, but SO SERIOUS about their jobs and willing to do anything to further their careers. When I met my husband, I was surprised how directed he was with his life and how dedicated he was to school, but that he was willing and able to also include me into his life the way I wished to include him in mine.

Hmm...that's funny. Replace "Amercian guy/guys" with "American woman/women" and your experience, Karen, is exactly like mine -- only with the opposite sex. Until I met my Canadian fiancee, all of the American women I've met and dated in the past have been grossly immature and very often, acted like spoiled brats. I'd also noticed that the majority of American women I've dated have been interested in furthering their careers, but had little-to-no interest in working on the relationship aspect of our lives.

So I think the door swings both ways: American men and women can be just as greedy, self-centered, and egotistical as each other. Does this mean all men and women from the U.S. are this way? Of course not. It just means that neither gender is inherently better or more sophisticated or more mature than the other.

What it really comes down to is individuals, since there are good and bad people in every country and culture. So I think anyone here saying things such as "All American [insert gender] are this way..." is completely wrong, since everyone is different. :)

Which was the reason for this thread.

I don't think it's necessarily bad to make generalizations about cultural characteristics as long as we don't mistake them for fact.

Yeah stereotypes are only OK when they emphasis some positive trait. LOL

Stereotypes are good because a lot of the time they are right, and they're bad because a lot of the time they are wrong.

The same applies to generalizations, generally speaking.

Of course they are, but people don't want to hear anything negative.
