My husband is the most intelligent man I've ever met....

he doesn't sit on the couch watching football and farting like American men (LOL....how's that for a stereotype)

He's cultured, well-read, hysterically funny, a great Daddy to our new daughter and my two sons.......an equal partner in every way....

"We are the real countries,

Not the boundaries drawn on maps,

With the names of powerful men.

That's all I've wanted -

To walk in such a place with you,

On an earth without maps."

Well, we talked once, and I was addicted to him, everything about him. Hehe. We fell in love, it wasn't something like his acent or looks or whatever. It was his charm, but as the time passed, those things became more precious to me. His daring eyes, gorgeous smile, sexy bod. ;) Hehe. And at one time his accent was a big thing (still means a lot to me), but I don't notice it as much as I did, because I've talked to him so much. I love everything about him. He's very smart. He's funny, good looking, sweet, loving, caring, AH...the list could go on. But the one thing I love most about him is that he loves me back.

The reasons don't have a whole lot to do with him being foreign, but him being who he is. He's kind, sweet, and most of all doesn't have these pre-concieved notions of beauty. I'll freely admit, I'm overweight, and most men here in the U.S. won't give me a second look because of it.

I think this is a good thread ;) there's so much talk around here about what's wrong with American women, it has always made me wonder: well, if American men are SO GREAT why are all of the American ladies on this site with foreign men, many of whom are from societies that expect more "traditional values" than the US?

From my own personal experience, American guys are very nice, fun, generally good-natured, etc, but they take a LONG TIME to grow up and that gets VERY tiresome. Of course there are exceptions, but I have never met any of these exceptions, and even if a guy is nice and fun, there's no future there because being with a 20's-something American guy is like babysitting him until he turns 35.

But the immaturity just extends to the relationship. American guys that I have dated have all been unreliable and childishly selfish when it comes to the relationship, but SO SERIOUS about their jobs and willing to do anything to further their careers. When I met my husband, I was surprised how directed he was with his life and how dedicated he was to school, but that he was willing and able to also include me into his life the way I wished to include him in mine.

I brought this over from the thread I created without noticing this one...

he doesn't sit on the couch watching football and farting like American men (LOL....how's that for a stereotype)

I almost pee'd in my pants when I read this...

When I met my husband, I was surprised how directed he was with his life and how dedicated he was to school, but that he was willing and able to also include me into his life the way I wished to include him in mine.

Hmm...that's funny. Replace "Amercian guy/guys" with "American woman/women" and your experience, Karen, is exactly like mine -- only with the opposite sex. Until I met my Canadian fiancee, all of the American women I've met and dated in the past have been grossly immature and very often, acted like spoiled brats. I'd also noticed that the majority of American women I've dated have been interested in furthering their careers, but had little-to-no interest in working on the relationship aspect of our lives.

So I think the door swings both ways: American men and women can be just as greedy, self-centered, and egotistical as each other. Does this mean all men and women from the U.S. are this way? Of course not. It just means that neither gender is inherently better or more sophisticated or more mature than the other.

What it really comes down to is individuals, since there are good and bad people in every country and culture. So I think anyone here saying things such as "All American [insert gender] are this way..." is completely wrong, since everyone is different. :)

Exactly. My fiance comes from a culture where a lot of men are more immature and less respectful of women than the average American. They live with their parents until marriage, are total mama's boys, and use women shamelessly sometimes. I found a guy who knew what he wanted, is completely independent, career driven but at the same time completely willing to make our relationship as much of a priority (or moreso) as I do.

Not something I would expect in a "Brazilian man"... if people are looking for mates that fit a national mold, they'll probably end up disappointed...

As far as the beauties of Eastern Europe, as my fiancé says, having grown up in an area with many Ukrainian immigrants, have you seen many Ukrainian grandmas lately?

Yes, and if you ask them how old they are, they will say something like "43." That's the shocker...

Seen Borat, have you Alex? :P
