Hello :)

I was really hoping someone on here has moved their stuff across the border using a k1/k2 visa. I'm hoping to save money on movers so thought I would rent a u-haul and drive my stuff over myself across the border from Canada. I'm also hoping to get through the border with the least hassle :) is there a special way I should be packing my boxes? Should I make a list or mark the boxes a certain way? Also... Is there anything I'm NOT allowed to bring across other than plants and illegal stuff of course :) All tips would be much appreciated!!

Thank you!!

I moved across the border - Canada to USA. You cannot bring across the things you mentioned - and if you are bringing pets they need to be checked out and cleared by a vet first, and have the paperwork to prove it. You need to label each box with it's contents and the value, and number the boxes. You will need to have a matching list of the box numbers, with the contents and value for customs.

When you are at the border you will need to show them the list - it is up to them of they want to open anything to check it out. When I went through they checked the list, glanced in my u-haul a few minutes... took the pet paperwork and I was good to go.

You will most likely have a few more questions coming in with the visa - but should be pretty easy overall.

Is there a limit to the values allowed to be taken across?

No limits, just make sure you have everything organized. If you are bringing more then $10,000 USD you will need to declare that at the border.

You'll find lots of threads on this in the Canada regional forum. I will move your thread there. :)

Basically, you just need a list of the items..... though I have yet to hear of anyone being asked for it. You can bring plants.... you just have to go through a special process for it. Kathryn41 has some posts about that.

You'll also want to review some of the threads on renting a U-Haul. Lots of horror stories and high costs. Anyway, check out the many threads in the Canada forum about this.

I looked into a U-Haul too. Extremely expensive and some of the moving rates were very comparable so I decided to let the professionals handle my big stuff, and all I have to deal with is my visa and importing my van at the border.

Not sure how much stuff you have but I am going to be using Relocation Services Canada. They have all the proper paperwork for customs and they do it all the time. I bought extra insurance just in case they lose any of my stuff.

Here is the link:

Good luck to you! :)

I drove my Uhaul over. I made an itemized numbered list that corresponded with all my boxes. I also had the 3299 customs form filled out (see link below)

http://forms.cbp.gov/pdf/cbp_form_3299.pdf

When I crossed over at Lewiston-Queenston, the CBP guy opened up my Uhaul and just peeked in. I asked him if he wanted my list, he just laughed, shook his head and said no. Just told me to go in and wait while they processed the big yellow envelope. 45 mins of processing my K1 and I was on my merry way.

I had a list of all my stuff, not terribly specific but it was a couple pages. I also had a label on each box. They did not look at either.

Uhaul is super expensive. I am from a border city so my husband (fiance at the time) picked up a Penske truck in Michigan and drove it over we filled it up and crossed. WAY cheaper. If that is an option for you.

That's my plan. Have my husband drive to the border and get a Penske truck nearby. Unlimited miles and relatively low pricing. Technically a one-way trip so very convenient.

I'll be doing a one way trip with a UHaul. I live in a border town so my fiance is going to go pick one up in the USA drive it back to Canada and then we're gonna pack up and drive across the USA. It's going to be about 1200 including tax, insurance etc. It'll be about a 5 day trip. With a cat. An adventure really.

I used Uhaul from NS to DC (side trip to RI) Ensure you check over the Uhaul very well--I had a newer truck, but the 1 complaint about Uhaul is they do not maintain their trucks that well, so look over the fluid levels and to help out that gas MPG--the tire pressure

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
