So less desert in the American SW, not more?

The key word is CHANGE. While some educated guesses have been made on precipitation pattern shifts, it is a complex science and there will probably be many surprises!

So the climate will change over a period of time.

Sounds manageable. It's not like it'll be a one-shot thing where we wake up tomorrow and there's penguins outside my window.

What many people don't seem to appreciate is how interdependent we are on thousands of other species of life and their well-being. Humans are capable of significant adaptations of our own but it is not so certain that all the other life-forms will do well. Basically we are talking about a huge roll of the dice. Change that occurs slowly, over thousands and tens of thousands of years is far easier to adapt to than change that takes place over mere decades. In a hundred or two hundred years we will know (if we have survived) much better how this planet wide science experiment has turned out. I personally am quite pessimistic that if humanity cannot even resolve problems like war and domestic gun violence we are highly unlikely to collectively agree to the widespread sacrifices in life style necessary to effect significant reductions of global climate change causing carbon dioxide production. It will be an interesting ride!

There have been several recent studies that suggest that evolution happens faster, much faster, than first suspected, especially in highly stressed environments. The simpler creatures seem to be the quickest to adapt, due to a much shorter reproductive cycle.

So there is hope for the tea party!

If only the dinosaurs were allowed just a hundred million years more, they'd be building igloos and frolicking in the snow.

So comparatively speaking, we mammals will survive whatever destruction we unleash on this planet, just not as humans.

Now you are getting it. The planet will survive anything we do, and life will continue to persevere. Hippies, on the other hand, will be the first to go.

I did not realize you had the education and expertise in alternative energy to be such an analyst for the government! Where can I look for the articles you have published?

Calling me a liar, eh? Send me your email by PM so I can attach one of my signed contracts and send it to you.

Then I will expect an apology from you for insinuating I am a liar.

As to the 'pollution industry' trying to get in on the research on alternative energy, it might be an honest effort to transition to coming technologies. Or it could be the best way to steer the 'findings' in a way that guarantees their pockets will continue to be filled to capacity even if it destroys the future of civilization or large parts of it on this planet!

As to pea brains and science, you obviously have little actual understanding or appreciation of the enormous volume of peer-reviewed research in this area!

*yawn* Tell that to the people paying me to do energy research.

If only the dinosaurs were allowed just a hundred million years more, they'd be building igloos and frolicking in the snow.

Excellent. The dinosaurs were wiped out by an asteroid striking the earth at what is now the Yucatan Peninsula. It may have only taken a matter of days. So, rather than understanding the science involved to forestall a disaster of similar proportions (like tracking asteroids and developing the capability to zap them in space or re-direct) you instead use it incorrectly to make infantile "we're all going to die like the dinosaurs" fear-mongering statements about global warming.

Anyone can make up these kinds of hand-waving statements. Like the above poster's weird "Bangladeshis will all be moving to Alaska" statement. Look how retarded that statement is. They have glaciated terrain a hundred miles north of their own border, so if the premise is that they're moving to former glaciated areas then why move seven thousand miles instead of one hundred? It is also a matter of moving to higher ground if the oceans rise, not moving to where the food will be grown. The midwest USA ships grain to Russia and other countries instead of all the Russians etc. needing to move to Iowa in order to eat.

These kinds of statements are stupid on so many levels that they aren't worth addressing because they prove themselves incapable of even formulating rational thoughts. Their tactic is to try to put people on the defensive and keep them there by asking one idiotic question after another. It doesn't matter if you answer them. Because they have another stupid question right behind it.

Despite being the very people asking the stupid questions - observe how they pose themselves as the ones so much more intelligent than everyone else! This is the power of stupid memes. Once the stupid people pick up the meme, they're going to be saying how smart they are. Life is interdependent? Really?! You mean like an ecosystem? That's a grade school level concept. So no, I don't think "many" people are incapable of understanding that. Quite the opposite - who doesn't know that?

Wow, a bona fide energy expert. We are accustomed to squabbling amongst ourselves, a varied group of people who have one thing in common - we're experts in nothing.

So when an actual expert shows up in our midst, we treat him the way we treat everyone else.

On behalf of the rest of VJ (especially james and lincoln's mullet), I offer you an apology.

I look forward to learning more from you!
