Hi! I arrived to the US on a K1 visa on December first. I had a huge envelope with the papers they needed, including my birth certificate, and they kept all of it. So now I'm in the US and for the adjustment of status I need a copy of my birth certificate... What do I do?

Well, you better see to request a new copy from your birth country.

It's better not to assume you will have your documents back when you submit them in the first place. They always keep the documents in the sealed envelope handed at POE. It's part of your case.

Never give originals of your important documents and expect to get them back. Always use copies and keep your originals to show them at any interviews you may have during your immigration process. Request another one from your country. Perhaps get a few of them while you are at it so you will have extras.

If you have a copy of your birth certificate, use it. Make a copy of your copy to use for AOS, If you have an interview, take another copy with you and let them know your original is in your file. Ask to switch out a copy so you can have your original back. It might be one way to get your original back, but you may not have an interview.
