Hello,

My husband is sponsoring me to get adjustment of status. However, I called several lawyers to help us file our paper work and their fees ranged from $2000-$2500 plus immigration fees. Do we really need a lawyer? Thanks!

if your case is normal w/o any complication then the answer is NO. if you have a more complicated case then yes. the forms are easy and this forum will help you answer any questions you may need. again for a basic normal case then you can do it yourself and save 2000+ dollars, most of us on here are doing the same.

Day 11/14 Mailed AOS Package

Day 11/16 AOS Package Accepted

Day 11/20 Received Text with receipt numbers

If your case is straightforward (no overstay, criminal records, etc) you don't need one. Just read (and study) the guides http://www.visajourney.com/content/guides . I know it seems overwhelming at first but it's really not that complicated. I'm going through this process myself and I get all the help I need from this site =)

I did overstay. I was 10 years-old when my dad was working for Cruise Carnival and he broke his back. We flew to Miami and everything got complicated after that, the lawsuit, his rehabilitation and 911! Immigration was a mess at that point so they denied our visas to be renewed (they never send us deportation letters)so we just stayed. I just got married to an American citizen and he wants to legalize me. I have no criminal records and I go to University.

Tons of people overstay. Overstay by itself is forgiven for spouses of USCs and is not a reason for a lawyer unless a) you feel more comfortable with a lawyer or b) there are more complicated aspects to your case. I won't tell you not to get a lawyer - you have to decide what is best for you. But don't get scared into thinking overstay alone is something uncommon that requires a lawyer.

That said, if you applied for a renewal and were denied there is always a chance you were, at some point, put into removal proceedings even if you never got a letter. Unlikely, but possible, so just take that all into consideration.
