Should be number 2, but there are some folks that refuse to believe we can operate on the same level as non minorities. Look at the tuskegee airmen, they scored high enough(sometimes higher) than their white counterparts, and they were still rejected. That's why Affirmation Action came into place later on, minorities couldn't get their foot in the door, no matter how hard they tried.

Well, yes of course. I'd like to think we've advanced further in this country than 1940s Alabama.

We have, but we still have some ways to go. I don't think racism will ever really go away. Even though we have a black man as president, and I know so many folks will aruge what I am about to say, but I am willing to bet any money, no president has gone through what Obama has endured. I mean, the whole birth ceritficate was so disrespectful in itself, all the other ####### is background noise.

I agree with that. It'll never go away entirely in regards to any race really.

However, there has to be a point in time where the minority races in this country stop blaming racism for everything that doesn't go their way. Or expecting some type of government special treatment because they are a minority. At some point it becomes counter-productive and people on both sides resent it. Personally I think that time is either now or very close to now.

Hell you yourself are perfect example of that. You're probably one of the most (if not the most) reasonable level headed people here in P&R on VJ. Look at all the raving mad f*ucked up white people that post here. Makes me ashamed to be white sometimes.

I never understand a statement like this. Someone else being a lunatic does not mean that you should be ashamed of something you have in common with them, especially something out of your control. Someone else, as crazy as they are, should never make you ashamed of who YOU are.

True dat. It just proves that good and bad comes in all shapes, sizes and colors.

Yeah thinking about it, I probably should've phrased that differently. I guess my point was that Marvin goes against all the racial sterotypes that are out there. Sometimes things get lost somewhere between the chair and the keyboard.

Which is probably the reason why he hasn't gone anywhere near the "small #######" thread.

Actually Ev, I get what he is trying to say. When I see my people with saggy pants, talking broken english, acting ignorant, and just feeding every negative stereotype there is, it brings me down. Because I know in my heart I will be judged on those actions of a few, not my own. Case in point: ( I am starting to love this)

When we first got to Japan, I was waiting in line at the base dining facility to grab some lunch. In front of me were some black sailors and one Korean officer. He was there for an OPT(Operational Planning Team). The sailors were all loud and being ignorant, even in uniform, talking crazy and just being a general annoyance. He just stood there with this look on his face, pure disgust. After they were served and found their seating, I walked up behind the officer and greeted him in Korean since I know how to say hello, goodbye, and thank you in most asian languages. He was completely caught by suprise, and started talking back in Korean. At that point I apologized and said I only know a little bit and just wanted to extend my respect to him as a Korean and an officer of the Navy. He said, you should be an example to your peers.

Even though I can only control my actions, I always feel responsible when we act so damn crazy.

It shouldn't bring you down. I get why it does, but it shouldn't. Easier said than done, though.

i went through a phase in my early teens when i was extremely embarrassed to be white. my phase coincided with the kkk attempting a resurgence in winchester and the release of spike lee's malcolm x (after seeing the movie three or four times i bought the book and read it multiple times) - i had a crazy case of white guilt. the rodney king incident and an obsession for nwa, da lynch mob, and geto boys didn't help matters. so i spent a few years hating white people. i was certain i would never ever date or marry a white guy and i would never have a white baby, because ew they're oppressors and must be stopped!

thankfully i outgrew it, but it took some time for me to realize that ignorance is color blind.

Honestly a lot of folks would rather have a fair shot and not blame someone else. But as I explained, there are plenty of times where we have tried to do the right thing and you watch them get rejected simply because they are not of fair skin. Because you are white(this isn't aimed at you or any other people on here, just using context) you wouldn't look at for it. If you didn't get a job, you'd think you weren't qualified, if you get pulled over, you would think you did something wrong. And for the most part I do the same thing, but there are those times when there was nothing wrong, everything was right, and it still happened. Now, it could be anything but race, and I am aware of that, but there have been sometimes when they let you know, it's not you, it's your skin color, you can't shake that.

I'm working on getting my bachelor's degree so I can become a Foreign Service Officer, and it's not the ACT test, nor the physial or medical test, or even the clearance(I have a Top Secret already) that gets me nervous, it's the interview. When they see me, all I can think is, please let my 20 year record speak, let me suit and tie speak, let my english skills speak, not my skin color.
