We all have preferences, but I would never choose one color over the other when it comes to stuff like this.

Thats because to you (and most of us) color is not a big issue concerning healthcare, but for

SOme people gender "is" important and I suspect a young looking doctor might raise concern is a serious matter is at hand.

And then again I bet there are some types of religion which require someone of the same faith to deliver a baby or whatever.

The part I get a chuckle at is how some rush to look down their nose at the goofball in the story when they or those they know do the same thing just in a different category.

Lets suppose your huband went to get his prostate checked and the attending Doctor was known to be a Homosexual, would it be acceptable for your husband to decline that invasive exam?

I say most depends on what the Insurance Carrier says about it, when called up for the decision.

I suppose there are two separate issues here.

1. What will the law or policy of the hospital allow.

2. What is socially acceptable.

As we still have somewhat of a free market, one is free to choose to a degree, as this free market diminishes, more control and less choice will be available.

As for what is socially acceptable, that will no doubt change too. (as it always has) So the woman who only feels comfy with a woman doing the probing may find that type of discrimination is not longer allowed.

Yes, it is absolutely OK to request a same sex health care provider. It is routine where I work to offer that. Indulging overt racism is NOT!

1. It is always the right of the patient to decline any exam or procedure he or she does not want.

2. Perhaps a gay doctor would be even better than a straight one at being able to detect prostate abnormality!
