Is my foreign marriage recognized in the USA?

I never really thought about this until now...

I was married in Turkey to a Turkish citizen. I brought him to the USA on a K-3 visa, did the adjustment of status, and he got his greencard. We've been together for 5 1/2 years in America.

However, was I supposed to register our marriage here in the USA or does filing income taxes together, doing the immigration paperwork, and changing my name with the Social Security Administration automatically register my marriage in this country?

I'm curious because I know that my husband had to register our marriage in Turkey with his ID card, etc.

09/29/06 - I-130 petition mailed
12/13/06 - NOA2 - APPROVED
10/27/06 - I-129F petition mailed
12/13/06 - NOA2 - APPROVED
03/27/07 - Interview in Ankara, Turkey - VISA APPROVED
04/01/07 - POE: JFK
05/07/07 - Mailed AOS forms
05/31/07 - Biometrics - Dover, Delaware
10/04/07 - Interview in Baltimore, Maryland
10/25/07 - GREENCARD ARRIVES!!!
10/25/07 - Applied for SSN
11/02/07 - SSN card arrives in mail
09/12/09 - Mailed I-751 forms (GC expiration date: 10/4/09)
09/19/09 - NOA1 Receipt letter received received
10/20/09 - Biometrics - Dover, Delaware
12/19/09 - NOA2 - APPROVED
01/09/10 - 10 year GC arrives

02/25/14 - DIVORCED DUE TO ABUSIVE HUSBAND

The US does not register foreign marriages.

The US already recognize your marriage. The US granted the K-3 spousal visa based on your marriage. Would be silly that to give your husband a visa based on your marriage and not recognize it, no?

July 26th 2012: Engaged

December 18th 2012: I-129f received at dallas po box
DECEMBER 20th: NOA1 (only found out once hardcopy came in the mail)
December 21st, 2012: Check cashed
Dec 27, 2012: Fiances alien registration number was changed. Proven.
December 29th 2012: Received Noa1 Hard-copy(no txt or email was sent)
Jan. 10th 2013: Happy birthday to my Sweety, first birthday apart in years!
January 15 2013: "mailing adress was changed" (touched?)
May-20-2013 NOA2!!! Exactly 5 months!
May-23-2013 Noa2 hard copy recieved!
June-05-2013 Called NVC, casre recieved, forwared to Ankara

The USA is unusual in that there is no National registration of marriages. States recognize marriages performed in other States and in other countries.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...

There is validity of marriage based on the principal of comity. The US recognizes other contries legal decrees. So if if your marriage is valid in the country where it was performed then it will be treated as valid in the US. There is no need for further action.

USCIS stage ( 66 days)
10/12/2012: NOA 1
12/17/2012: NOA 2 (case was transferred to NYC office 11/27/12)
NVC stage ( 20 days)
01/08/2013: Case # and IIN assigned ( file arrived NVC mail room 12/20/12)

u marriage is legal in the United States. You marriage license ( Red Book)need to translate from Turkish to English, and then you can go to Social Security. If you took his last name I recommend you to change all your legal Documents
