Well Steve, If you look at the top picture in post 1006 you will see that it states, and I quote, "One Pass Zeros (1 Pass) Unused Clusters"

Basically what that says is that it was only wiping the unused clusters on your hard drive, not touching the OS.

So, before you wipe the drive make sure you get either a replacement windows key or a legible print out of your current one.

You can try contacting the vendor/manufacturer of the laptop or worst case scenario calling Microsoft. But I really mean worst case. That would suck.

KDH!!!!

Can you bring my pizza at lunch time tomorrow?

Thank you!

There will usually be a label of real cheap paper that will tear to shreds if you try to remove it, on the computer somewhere. Where you going to wipe and reinstall the operating system? Or are you just insuring no deleted files can be restored from the hard drive?

The sticker is no longer legible. I was trying to destroy all traces of secret scientific materials so I can give the computer away

I can get this done for you in a few easy to follow steps that literally only takes moments and very little computer know how.

Step 1 - Remove the hard drive

Step 2 - place hard drive on floor or other hard surface

Step 4 - Hit the bloody hard drive with a hammer!

Step 5 - Inform person receiving the laptop as a gift that the hard drive resented the rest of the laptop and came up missing days ago. While there is a full search already in the works, it would be best if they went and purchased another hard drive that doesn't mind being in close proximity with the rest of the laptop.

Done!!!!

Yep I went back and saw that. Sucks to loose your key, because Microsoft help in India takes forever and doesn't always believe the story of a bad sticker. Even though the stickers are designed to be destroyed easily. Windows 7 does have a backup option, that will back up everything to a USB hard drive. You can reinstall everything that wasn't deleted and do not need the key. Because its still loaded into the backed up operating system. I've restored a few computers using those backups, but never a netbook. You need to make sure its in the boot list of the bios, and the bios can boot to the device. Good news is you need not wipe the hard drive until after the backup image is made and you know you can boot to it. Do you know how to get to the bios on your netbook?

     Any computers that are given away from my work go through a similar process. Except the hard drive goes and has a little visit with a drill press. And that's after wiping and Fdisking it.

Also, if you ever need a really strong magnet take apart a hard drive.

Tell him you'll throw in an Indonesian virgin with a small #######. That should seal the deal.

You can format the drive... If you do, don't do a quick format. A full normal format will probably take a day and will wipe it all clean. But you will need a Windows key to reinstall. OR if you're giving the computer away, let them buy their own windows :D Home is pretty cheap.
