Topic has been moved from the Thailand Regional forum to the Tourist Visa forum as a more appropriate location for this discussion.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

each time you use your tourist visa they will let you stay for up to 6 months (even though you tell them that your stay will be shorter). The CBP officer at the POE will attach your arrival/departure record (I-94) to your passport and it's up to them to determine how long you can stay...they will stamp the date you need to leave by on your passport as well. Hope this helps =)

8 months is the maximum, and usually what they give you. If they are suspicious of you or you travelled a lot recently, they may give you less.

I think Penguin had a typo up there. Six months is the max, but the time you are given is determined by Border Patrol.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

The extremes I have come across are 1 day and 1 year.

From CBP FAM:

Terms of admission: Maximum admission is 1 year. If admissible, a B-2 is generally admitted for 6 months.
(A) Minimum admission period. Unless specifically authorized by a supervisory inspector, the admission period shall be no less than 6 months.

OP's 90 day period concept applies to WVP travelers

I also think Harpa Timsah meant CBP, not Border Patrol.

Thanks so much, this is very helpful.

To explain a bit more about my specifics, my girl friend from Thailand is trying to get a B-2 to visit me here in the states. She owns property and has children so we are hoping that shows ample reason for her to return home after the vacation. She was thinking to come and visit for 2 months while my thinking is requesting such a long period away from her kids might be a red flag.

Ultimately if we ask for 3 weeks and are granted longer maybe we change the airline ticket so she stays a while longer maybe we don't, but if we ask for 2 months maybe we don't get the visa at all.

Am I over thinking this thing or is my reasoning valid?

Thanks
