Americans like to be different. They're also one of the only (if not THE only) countries in the world who take words like favourite, labour, etc and remove the U.

It's a country of special snowflakes.

Yeah, I know.

Still we call people in the USA Americans, when America is a whole continent ;)

Don't forget the arrogant refusal to adopt the metric system.

I once heard that the USA was one of the first countries to adopt the metric system officially. Only problem was that it never came into actual use by the general population. I think it is less arrogance and more simple inertia.

They are sneaking it up on you gradually. You are already getting strange weights for cans of coffee, and just about everybody is used to half-liter sized sodas. I took plenty of physical science courses in college, so I was already used to the metric system. And I have two sets for just about every kind of wrench, so no big deal there.
