They mean different things.

teaching my child to treat others as he wants to be treated isn't specifically a christian value, however the terminology used in matthew 7:12 is unique to the christian faith, in that it is a quote from their bible.

better?

Two commandments specify what it means to be a Christian: "Love God above all things." and "Love thy neighbor as thyself." Neither are uniquely Christian, as both are almost direct quotes from the Old Testament, the second comes from Leviticus.

I am not saying they do.

So if my parents weren't Christians, and also didn't follow any religion, would them teaching me to be nice and respectful STILL be instilling Christian values into me?

i was taught that accepting jesus as your personal savior was what it specifically means to be christian. i was taught that the old testament, including the ten commandments, was the old code so to speak. with the arrival and resurrection of jesus, christian focus was to live as jesus lived.

doesn't matter really. i'm sort of confused. if you're under the impression that i can't see the good that christian values can bring out in a person, i don't feel that way necessarily. i lean more towards religion as a whole does more harm toward humanity than good. the goodness we attribute to religious morals and convictions are just as easily obtained and practiced by striving to be a decent human being, sans religion.

You are entitled to your confusion. I prefer enlightenment, whatever the source.

She made a very Christian statement. Nothing more, nothing less. I was simply acknowledging that.

Saying I treat others the way I want to be treated is not "very Christian" ... it's human decency. Is that only a Christian thing?

Humans are not always decent to their fellow humans. No, it is not just a "Christian thing". I could have said it was a very Jewish thing, but the reference would have been lost, I am sure, the way most folks quote Leviticus around here.

Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord. - Leviticus 19:18
