I currently have a Canadian National Student Loan that I am in the midst of paying back. Will this (seeing as it is considered debt) be an issue during our Visa process or when I finally move to the US to be with Hubby? Just curious if anyone knows!

It will not affect anything. When you have a loan, the lender doesn't own you. You can live freely wherever you want to. It was their risk to give you the loan, and you are still required to pay it off after you move at your pre-arranged agreement. Failure to abide by your agreement with the lender can trigger a lawsuit, but this move will not trigger a breach in contract unless you agreed to remain in Canada until it is paid off (which I'm sure it would be illegal to have something like this in a contract in most situations).

Doesn't effect the visa process, though there's some hiccups once you are out of Canada.

If you are in repayment assistance - being out of canada one doesn't qualify you for it anymore.

For repayment, they do accept US checks but cannot auto-pull your payments through a US bank account. So, either you pay with a canadian bank account, or mail in US checks. What works for me, since I'm too lazy to wire money around to my Canadian bank account, is mailing 6 checks for 6 months of payments at a time.

Thank you for the information - I have been wondering the very same thing. Although with the recent news of losing 538k students information, I'd be half pressed to lose the loan. Just kidding!

If you were one of the people’s whose info was “lost”, it might be prudent to put some sort of hold on your Canadian files so no one can open any credit in your name when you are out of the country.

Just in case you and hubby decide to move back to Canada in the future.

Yes, thank you - that is a very good point. I'm planning that for sure. I was one of them and I'm going to get the credit protection that the government is offering, however I find that one a bit amusing, considering they lost it in the first place. You can get one free credit report a year and I'm watching my stuff like a hawk - and I will be even after I move.
