More positively this thread is approaching 2500 views and 58 posts!

Even more sad, 2500 views should be at least 1250 signatures, hopeful I know but I also know everyone isn't going to agree or sign.

May God bless and keep you always~ May your wishes all come true~ May you always do for others~ And let others do for you~

May you build a ladder to the stars~ And climb on every rung~May you stay forever young

The petition to make unlocking cell phones legal has hit 100,000 signatures..

I hope they keep the locking part legal. My wife just lost her smartphone, and it was nice to know I could keep anyone else from using that serial number for five years.

If someone is willing to steal or use an ill-gotten phone I doubt the fear of illegally unlocking it is going to be a deterrent.

The cell providers do not lock cell phones for your own protection, they lock them to prevent you from bringing your phone to another carrier, making them lose business (ie. monopoly). The only benefit to customers, if you can call it a benefit, is that the cellular carriers force you into a high-interest bank loan (subsidy) and hide it in your monthly bill so that you can pay a discounted up-front price on your cell phone.

More sad is that only 99 people have signed it... And three of them are myself, my fiance, and a friend.

They have a voluntary program, where you can report the cell phone you lost, or was stolen, to all the major carriers, so that the serial number of your phone can not be activated. Even if you decide to reactivate it again, it takes a minimum of five days to have that serial number removed from the do not activate list. That is something to consider if you ever buy, or "find", a used phone.
