  1. 1. Where would you rather live?

    • Silicon Valley.

    • That's a tough choice.

My Database class was taught by a MC68000 Assembly programmer. Most of the class was versed in C. C confused him more that machine code confused most of the class.

I went to college in the early days of Java. Before they released Java 2. The professors knew it and we learned it. All our assignments were in Java with some Perl and SQL.

Interesting. I majored in CS and there was no class where I could finish an assignment with just psuedocode. There WERE assignments where the first submission was pseudocode, once that got profs ok we had to write it into actual code.

There were always the opportunity to write demonstration programs, but they were rarely required. It would be useless to write code for a nondeterministic finite state machine.

Let's just say we all learned SQL together. It was a newly introduced course, and we were all guinea pigs, including the instructor.

The instructor didn't know SQL? You should sue that university for educational malpractice.

But...but..he reprogrammed the container "database" for the Port of Alameda, all in machine code, because the system was too antiquated and too small to use some commercially available software. Serious. He got bent out of shape because they wouldn't give him tenure, so he quit, took the contract, and then came back with his tail between his legs, looking to get his position back.

Seems whatever company he did that for, needed to expand the current system, while they began the process of switching to a more modern system.

you do realize that the time frame you went to college and the time frame he went to college is probably 2 decades apart?

I think we were only a decade apart. But a lot of things that were just being introduced as I went to school, were already standardized and implemented when he went to school.
