Hello !

I am working on my AOS and gathering all documents, including affidavits of bona fide marriage and I know it's not required to have them notarized, I just chose that option. Since one is in my language, I will get it translated but I wonder, should I get only the english translation notarized or just both?

Thank you for your help !

Neither need to be notarized. Just translated.

Thank you for your answer. As I mentioned in my first email, I DO know they don't need to be notarized, I just chose to get them notarized, but my question was does it matter to get the documents in foreign language notarized since the translated versions will be anyways

You said you chose to get them notarized, in that case, just get everything notarized, no?

In the end, and as you know, it doesn't need to be notarized so it's really up to you if you have nothing notarized/only the translation/everything.

Since they don't need to be notarized, you can choose whatever you like.

ROC:

Yes that's the idea, getting all of them notarized as if I make that choice, it makes more sense to do it for everything but as I will get them all notarized by the same person, what I was wondering is "does it make sense to make a document in a foreign language notarized by someone who doesn't understand that language....well, we really come with such weird and complicated questions when going through aos :bonk:

Yes, there are always some weird questions coming up when assembling the package, and in the end, the best is to follow your logic. I think that it doesn't make sense to notarized the foreign document IF the author of this document is not present to sign it in front of the notary (I would say, no matter if the notary understand the language or no, but I may be wrong).

Can the author of your foreign document make notarized that document in his/her country? (France I suppose?) and then send everything back to you.

Thanks for your reply. Yes that's what I was thinking too, asking my sister to get it notarized in France and send it like this back to me but it lead me to another question : here we would go get all of our documents notarized to a bank, but I don't know if in France documents can be notarized by other people than notaries.....I mean just like this walking into a bank....i think we are just not going to notarize it at all because I was advise to do it so but it is just a complete loss of time and energy..... :bonk:

My philosophy for unrequired/unprecised documents is: include them if it's easy to get them (like make a extra copy of your passport, more than 1 tax return, etc...), if it's too much trouble, I just don't bother with it.

You are going to apply for AOS as well as with EAD and AP, right?

Yes, AOS and EAD, not for AP though ( you mean by AP the travel authorization right?)

Yes, Advance Parole. You should do it, it's free (as the EAD application) and it's quick to prepare. Plus you never know if you would need to go back to France for a family/friend emergency while your AOS is pending (which can take a year). :)

It will be processed at the same time as your EAD and the result will be that your EAD card will have a note on it serving as an AP (travel authorization).

Yes, I have to say said like this it sounds like I have no reason for not doing it, that's true it's much better to have it in case...funny how I am losing time with stupid unecessary things such as notarizing documents and not taking care of more useful things -_-

Well, you didn't know. :) Take a look at it, it's really easy to prepare. It happens sometimes that people post a topic on VJ because they didn't file for AP, and suddenly they need to travel temporarily to their home country. It can be quite a hassle to obtain an AP quickly then.

Or you may never use it (like me) but better be safe than sorry (especially when it's easy to do).

Hi Didopage,

when you said the AP is free, we are well talking about the I-131 form? Because I checked on the uscis website and it says it is 360$ so I am confused about it, maybe I am not looking at the right form? thanks!
