Hello all,

I have a few questions regarding unemployment and my ability to self-sponsor my husband for our I-864 without the need of a co-sponsor.

To my understanding my unemployment checks are considered income. Is that correct?

Also, in order to prepare for the next steps at NVC, I started preparing work related documents. I have a letter from my employer who has laid me off stating the first date I was unemployed. Do I also need a letter from my local unemployment office confirming that I am receiving uc benefits?

Will I be able to qualify on my own to sponsor my husband? My mother has already offered to be my co-sponsor just in case.

I am the petitioner.

They don't just look at income per se, but your regular paychecks. Somehow, I don't think unemployment checks will go down well as steady income. I would find a co-sponsor.

Unemployment/social security checks are not considered as INCOME. Best option: Have your mother to be co-sponsor for your case or let your husband transfer his assets in United States if it meets with poverty guideline.

Thanks for your replies.

However some of my questions were still not addressed.

Do I have to submit a letter from my local unemployment office verifying that I am receiving benefits?

What if I work two part time jobs until I get a full time job in my field again? Does the I-864 require a full time job?

I am the petitioner.

Also, based on my research on this site and others, I am getting mixed information on whether my unemployment checks can qualify as income.

It's not that I don't believe members on this site but can anyone please site their source of information in regards to why my uc checks cannot be used as income?

The I-864 says nothing about unemployment benefits.

I am the petitioner.

For I-864, you are not required to get full time job. As long as you meet with poverty guidelines, you are fine.

Just wanted to give an update.

I called NVC today and they confirmed that Unemployment compensation benefits are treated as income. UC benefits are not the same as welfare checks FYI.

UC benefits are a taxable benefit and as long as you meet the 125% of the poverty guidelines you should qualify as a primary sponsor.

I am the petitioner.
