Hello Vjyers, just wanted to share my experience last week when we went to the Social Security Administration. We prepared everything that we needed (BC, MC, I-94, Passport w/ visa) as soon as we get to talk to the one of the personnel in the office He told us that i need to get my Employment authorization (EAD) first before applying for SSN number i also asked him about the fact that my I-94 is about to expire in a month and he just told me that "you are already here in the US, you entered legally you do not need to worry after you get your Employment Authorization just bring it here and you can apply for SSN" and he also told us that there was also a filipina under K1 who was there earlier that day and he told them the same thing too :P we are in the state of Kansas so maybe it really differs from state to state :)

God bless everyone

Getting a Social Security number does not depend upon which state you live in. Social Security is a federal program and is the same throughout the U.S. The person you spoke to at the Social Security office is wrong.

You do not have to wait for your work permit. You can get a Social Security number if you apply more than two weeks before your I-94 expires.

You should try again at the Social Security office and speak with a supervisor. Or, you can try a different Social Security office. You should take this document with you.

I agree with this poster. Talk to a supervisor.
