How does this not happen more often? The popes elected are generally in their late 70s or early 80s. How is it in all this time, nobody else has resigned due to reasons like this? I'm not saying his reasons aren't valid, I'm wondering how this is so rare.

idk. maybe he is closer to death than we know. i'm assuming he feels the church would be better served by the sitting pope making appearances, rather than a senior cardinal in his place.

is it about who can best serve the catholic church or it is about who would require the least alterations to the papal wardrobe? time to break out the glass slipper.
