My wife is to depart for Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, on March 20, 2013, to start her basic training. She is physically prepared. She exceeds the physical requirements of a 17 year old in the push-ups, sit-ups and run. I am just proud of her. Here she is, an immigrant to this country from the Philippines, the mother of our son, and my wife, and she is serving this country as an airman with an Air Refueling Wing. And God willing she will have her oath of naturalization the Thursday before she graduates from basic training.

Just am very proud of her...

Role reversal - you will be the male spouse of an active duty soldier. Will you apply and live on base in military housing?

He said that she is joining the Air National Guard, not going active duty. Guard soldiers don't receive military housing.

Oooooooooops :bonk:

She is in the Air National Guard. But Regular Air Force, Air Force Reserve, and Air National Guard all go through basic training and their technical schools together. Her Air Guard unit was in Iraq and Afghanistan. She has opportunities to deploy overseas coming up, but they mostly are just taking volunteers. She is happy that so many already want to volunteer all the time, and she says "let them". But she also has expressed an interest in deploying at "some time".

I am registered as a military dependent. I just got my ID card a couple weeks ago for that too. They do have a good family support group for families at the airbase, and lots of activities throughout the year for our son as well. We all can fly "space available", and have commissary and BX privileges. I can get medical if she is gone for over 30 days, but I dont really need that since I get my health care already through the VA as a veteran myself.

She had wanted to go regular Air Force, but she was past the age cut-off for that. The only option she had left was the Air National Guard, which she went with then.

My mom,and dad, and our son, will all be making the trip to Texas to see her graduate, I know that. And when she goes to her technical school at Ft. Lee, Virginia, my son and I will go there every other weekend to see her. That will be another 8 weeks, total of 16 weeks. It will be no big thing at least while she is gone about taking care of our son since I am the primary caretaker of him as it is now during the day.

When she gets all that done she will go to school again and work on another degree to become an RN. She already has a master of education degree, but wants to become a nurse now. Then she will try to go in the medical group at the airbase after that. She has been in this country for 4 years almost now...I think she is doing pretty good in forging her own path in that amount of time here.

No, not online. Her school has a special itinerary set up for her since she already has many of the classes though with her other degrees. She doesnt have anatomy and physiology though, nor does she have microbiology. I had all that though and did well in the sciences, so I will be able to help her with that. Then she just has the regular nursing courses to take after that. It wont be such a hectic program for her then. We decided to just go and get her ASN right now to become an RN so that she isnt under so much pressure, then she will do the bridge program later when we arent under so much financial pressure, and get her BSN. I think she wants to teach again, but in nursing, down the road, at the college level.
