Hi all,

Very frustrated to receive a letter without my 10 year green card! They are asking for more info, and since we don't have joint bank accounts, children, or a mortgage, I want to make sure that the rest of my docs are in place.

My husband is american, I am Canadian but we were married in Japan. Our Japanese marriage certificate is in Japanese, and I read that a translation by me would be sufficient. I then receive info that says since I translated it myself, I need a disinterested third party. The marriage certificate copy I provided is in Japanese, but does not include the witness names on it.

The government states that for the Translation of your Marriage Certificate:

If you submit a document in any language other than English, you must include a full English translation. The translator must certify that the translation is complete and accurate, and that he or she is competent to translate from the foreign language to English. Official extracts are acceptable, but only if they contain all the information necessary to make a decision on the case. Only extracts prepared by an authorized official, the "keeper of record," are acceptable. A summary of a document prepared by a translator is unacceptable.

Does this mean that I cannot have a translator translate the extract marriage certificate? WHen they say "Document" it is rather confusing. I am hoping that I can still supply the extract copy and then the translation of it. When we were married in Japan, they weren't even going to give us the other version, as it is huge. I never gave this copy as our marriage certificate becuase it is so large, and the extract is an A4 size sheet.

Is there also a certain doc my translator is supposed to use? I am hiring this translator, so I really want to make sure this is correct. Who knew this process was so costly! Any help would be great!!!!

If you have any experiences with this, I would love to hear from you!

Thanks!
