“If the applicant has no immediate need for the SSN and the translation can be done promptly or the foreign language document is the only evidence available; have the document translated by an authorized translator and use the document as evidence.”

“If the applicant has a pressing need for an SSN, and evidence other than the foreign language document is available; request other evidence and process the application without the foreign language document.”

RM 00203.040 Reviewing SSN Evidence:

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203040#B3

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GN 00301.340 Authorized Translators Defined:

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0200301340

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If a foreign-born person has the foreign birth certificate (BC) in his/her possession or can easily obtain a copy, he or she must submit it as proof of age. When a person is foreign-born, a BC may not exist, may not have been recorded shortly after birth, or the probative value of the document may not be high. In these situations, SSA can accept alternative evidence of age in order of probative value. The alternative evidence of age may be less than a year old, e.g., a DHS document or passport.

You can find detailed information regarding evidence that establishes age on our Website at:

http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203110

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess your only hope is to go back to the SSA office and speak with the office manager if you can come up with a "pressing need" reason that he or she will buy. Otherwise, you will just need to wait for the translation to be completed and periodically go into the SSA office to see if it's been completed.

January 2 - Packet resubmitted to California.

January 12 - NOA1 received (dated 01/07/2008)

January 19 - Biometrics appointment notice received (dated 01/15/2008)

February 1 - Biometrics

March 11 - Approved! Card production ordered (notified via e-mail).

March 20, 2008 - New card arrived in the mail :)

Done until 2018 :)

Unless you had to have your birth certificate translated when you applied for your SSN, you are comparing apples and oranges and your processing time is meaningless in the stituation.

Plus I would go on to say that even if you did need to have your birth certificate translated, unless it was in Arabic, even your processing time wouldn't be of much use.

We didn't even need Carlos's birth certificate. We had his passport, I-94..but the SS card never arrived, so we went back yesterday and were assigned a number on the spot. The guy helping us did ask him for another form of Identification such as a driver's license or voter registration card from Panama. Those things were in Spanish but it didn't hold us up at all.

Why do you need the birth certificate?

mdyoung, why would they not accept the translation done for the visa? You would think that if it were good enough for USCIS it would be good enough for the SSA.

Any ideas?

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.

Ah well. A bit like having to go to a designated doctor for the visa/AOS medical, I guess.
