Hi folks,

I got a question. Maybe someone could help me with this. We are going on vacation to Mexico. On my green card I have my married name, and on my Russian travel passport I have maiden name, but the passport is valid. Can it be a problem to get back to the U.S. or is it enough to just bring a marriage certificate with me?

Thanks in advance.

If you're flying, your air ticket has to be in the same name that's on your passport.

If you're driving, just bring passport, green card, and marriage certificate. That should do.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

I bought air tickets before I posted this question. I bought them in my married name. Then I contacted my travel agent, and ask her if she could change the name on the ticket. She just called me and told me that it is impossible to change the name on the ticket, but we have couple of options. She said, we can cancel tickets with no charge, and buy new ones, but the thing is that the other tickets will cost us $172 more. We have couple of hours left to make a desicion.

I also called United, explained my situation and asked them if it might be a problem to get on the plane if the name on the ticket doesn't much the name on the passport. The representative from the United assured me that it's not going to be a problem as long as I have my passport, driver's license, green card, and marriage certificate with me. She said she is in the same situation herself, and she usually books tickets in her married name, and it's not a problem. Do you think I can leave the situation as it is or is it worth buying new tickets and spending $172 more?

Thank you.

Well, lets just hope the people who check you in at the airport know about that as well. Generally, you should book tickets on the name that is in your passport since Airlines don't care for Greencards and stuff. If you don't want to change the name on the ticket they might not let you in the airplane (worst case) or they let you wait until everybody has checked in except for you. That way they can look through your stuff and make sure that you are really who you are claiming to be. Either way, it would be too risky for me.

Whichever way you are going to go..good luck and have a good time in MExico.

Now, there is an exact same discussion going on in a German forum and there some girls say they do good with just showing their passport and greencard plus the marriage licence but why go through all that trouble if you can have it easier and just book your ticket in your maiden name.

Hello there Girl from Germany,

When I got married, I reported my marriage to my country's (Philippine) consulate here in the USA. They have a Report of Marriage form. I sent them my passport, together with the original marriage certificate, and birth certificate, so my passport will be amended with my married name.

I don't know if your country's consulate requires that.

My advice is to get a name amendment or get a new passport - the new passport being the preferred option.

My wife has a passport amendment, but it's caused us problems. For instance, it took ten minutes for immigration at Hong Kong to clear her when I was cleared in less than 30 seconds. The agent kept looking at her passport with a very suspicious expression on his face. We were afraid he might not grant her clearance to enter.

On the other hand, we've never had a problem clearing US immigration.
