My fiance and i were talking about name change. He said, his friend told him that if i will take my husband's last name (assume already married), i have to use my maiden middle name as my married middle name then my husband's surname. Ex: my name is JANICE MONDEJAR ARAGON. My Husband's surname is KENLEY. If i take my husband's surname, my Married name should now be JANICE MONDEJAR KENLEY. He said its immigration policy.. Where to place ARAGON now? And how would that affect when renewing a passport since they'll ask for Birth certificate, MC, etc.. They won't match. Please clarify.. Thanx..

As for the statement I put in bold, it's WRONG, there is no such policy. :bonk:

You can have two middle names if you want or you can hyphenate your last name, like this: ARAGON-KENLEY.

"He said its immigration policy.. "<<<<<<That's a load of bull.

In general women that I know tend to keep their middle names (mine is Laura for example) and just take on their husband's surnames. So my name is now Nicole Laura R**** instead of Nicole Laura D***** with the latter being my surname from birth. Marriage certificates will have your previous full name on them which will be either your maiden name that's on your birth certificate or a surname from a previous marriage. (FYI A woman in the USA always has the right to assume her maiden name after divorce without cost or penalty.) You simply take your marriage certificate around when you change your name and to sure all your ID is changed. That MAY mean that you have to change your passport in which case you generally have to send in the original marriage certificate. You can choose not to change your passport until it needs to be renewed but then you should travel with your marriage certificate.

Some women do not assume their husband's surname and keep their maiden name. Other women choose to hyphenate them. You could be Janice Mondejar Aragon-Kenley with your last name being Aragon-Kenley, so you would be Mrs. Aragon-Kenley. Or you can choose to adopt your maiden surname as a middle name and be Janice Mondejar Aragon Kenley and Mrs. Kenley. (or leave out all middle names if you choose.) Most people I know do what I did and just change their surname.

Essentially you have a lot of choice and trust me when I say they will know who you are even with your maiden surname staring you in the face. That's why most forms tend to ask you for any previous surnames.

In the forms where it says maiden name/other names used, you will write: JANICE MONDEJAR ARAGON

Your married name now is: JANICE ARAGON KENLEY

For passport name change you will have to file a Report of Marriage Contracted Abroad. Refer here: http://www.philippineconsulatela.org/consular%20services/conserv-registry.htm#ROM
