Nov. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Robert E. Rubin, the Treasury secretary under President Bill Clinton who helped engineer the end of a generation of budget deficits, urged Democrats to increase taxes to erase the U.S. fiscal shortfall.

Very stupid move!

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I'm more worried about the unfunded liabilities of Social Security and how the "Baby Boomer" generation is about to bleed that dry. As it is, we only have about 3.3 workers for every one retiree right now; it's projected in a couple of decades that number will fall to two workers for every one retiree.

The SS system can't handle that effectively -- it needs a major revamp. Personally, I'm all for Private Retirement Accounts, but that plan fell on deaf ears. It's really too bad, because that was a good idea... :(

Come now, when was the budget ever balanced? do you remember what day it was? did it feel any different? Debt is very normal and can't be avoided! Their are things that can occur at any time. Hurricanes, floods, fire take your pick. Dean, that line about leaving debt for your kids is just there to tug on the old heart strings.

I remember when the Republicans were the party of fiscal responsibility. Oh well. I think that went out of fashion along with them being the party of small government and keeping the government out of your business.

Right now the American economy is propped up largely because China sees no reason to torch the dollar. It is less than likely that this will always be the case. Balancing the budget is a wise course, regardless of political party.

A balanced budget -- what a terrible idea.

Are conservatives really happy about owing so much money to China?

Wow, that shut 'em up! Good job!

And incidentally, balancing the budget doesn't necessarily mean a tax hike. Cutting pork works, too.

MMMM? Let me see, if I remember right we had budget surpluses during the Clinton years. While some external forces changed our economic outlook, our leadership on the economic front was doomed when Paul O'Neil was fired as Sec. of the Treasury because he would not sit idly by and watch the fiasco that we have develop. As to our debt, never going to be gone but that does not mean it has to grow at rates approaching $500 billion a year. Time for a change, America has spoken, and if it means a little restructuring, so be it. Maybe these damn liberal democrats who favor a more liberal immigration policy will take a look at the USCIS and fix it also with this "supposed tax increase." I for one would welcome that aspect of it.

You know what amazes me, if you talk to most of those who actually have honest accountants who help run a successful business they will tell you that if a business had books that looked liked the US government they would all be doing the perp walk.

Both parties are guilty each tries to make the budget look as best they can by using accounting creativity that would land any US company in the courts.

I like the guy from UTAH that stands up and questions ever earmark, talk about ballsy. Even his dad would not come to him for an earmark cause he knew he would be grilled about it. They had him on 60 minutes a while back.
