Being a cop is a power trip, some people handle it well, others don't. It does suck to watch the power change a person in a negative way.

I wonder if some people get in to that line of work soley for the power trip aspect of it? It surely can't be the salary.

May be some people truly wanna make a difference? Some may be because its a family heritage?

The salary is actually pretty good depending where you are. I have 1 friend who is a Citibank branch manager, and another friend who is an NYPD Sergeant. They compare jobs, and the NYPD gig is much better as a whole.

Citibank Manager with 20 years

Salary 130K. (no OT available)

Medical $ 4000 annually outta pocket

Dental None

Pension None

Retirement 401K

Vacation 20 days

Sick days 10

NYPD Sergeant

Salary 106K base (145K with OT)

Medical 7 dollars a month whole family

Dental Paid by Union

Pension 50% of last years salary after 20 years. plus 1/60th of everything earned after 20 years.

Retirement 457 K plus optional 401K

Retirement Union Annuity fund

Retirement 12K variable supplement sent every year

Vacation 27 days plus 3 Military days (he was a former Marine) plus 27 days because he works longer than 8 hr days. so thats 57 days total.

Free NYPD metrocard and Long Island railroad card.

Sick days unlimited, honor system.

and that's not all....there's a lotta little stuff.

so there you have it. Not too shabby. I kinda wish I went that route too...although I have a better gig lol.

The minimum acceptable passing level for each test is:

1. Vertical jump – 14 inches

2. 1 repetition bench press – 71% of the participant’s body weight

3. Number of sit-ups performed in 1 minute – minimum of 25

4. 300 meter run – completed in a minimum of 75 seconds

5. Number of push-ups completed in 1 minute – minimum of 19

6. 1.5 mile run – completed in 16:55 minutes

Wow, those requirements are quite laxed. I might have to look into that when I retire:)
