"most" doesn't exactly give me warm fuzzies either.

Most is the best you can hope for, unfortunately. While the vast majority will serve their communities well for their entire careers, there will always be some who take advantage of the power they have. And sadly, those are the ones who will make the news.

well, how many law enforcement agents are in the country? 100k? given any occupation, if you take a gene pool of 100 thousand people, you'll have "bad" people...

Exactly.

shoot first and ask questions later; those women should have known cops would be shooting up any truck matching the description.

It seems this forum only does the victim blaming thing when the suspect isn't a cop. Because then, cops are just pigs.

But if these women had pulled into a driveway to deliver these newspapers, then all bets would be off and it would be their own damn fault.

Most occupations don't have the powers that the police have. I see your point, but I think there are far more law enforcement personnel that have a screw loose than most people think. I also think people are quick to give law enforcement the benefit of the doubt simply because they wear a uniform.

It also has to do with your experience with them. I, personally, have never had a single negative experience with a law enforcement officer, nor do I know anyone who has. So I have no reason to be distrustful of the police in my area, or back in my hometown.

Human nature

No, it's hypocrisy.

I have 3 family members that are cops including my brother. I can tell you from my experiences with members of law enforcement that the "screw loose" part usually comes after a few years of being on the force. The power goes to their heads and they begin to think they are invincible. I watched my brother go through this, we used to be really close, but now I find it hard to be around him much at all.

I wish I could say the same on both counts.

Since you're from Canada, one of my favourites was getting pulled over in downtown Montreal for no seatbealt, and then getting screamed at for speaking English to the cop, even though I had Texas plates on my car. Granted that's pretty minor in the scope of things.

Most occupations don't require psychological testing. I took the MMPI. It's rigorous testing, and I had to be interviewed by a psychiatrist weeks later. (I'm not law enforcement). She wanted to know why I drew a picture of a house with a fence around it, among other things. Anyway, I have faith in that testing.

In terms of giving them the benefit of the doubt. I guess it would depend on where you are. I'm in NYC, and every shooting by the NYPD here is scrutinized in every aspect, by every enclave, and by every politician. And ALL police shootings here are presented to a Grand Jury. (most times there's no true bill). Now I imagine if you're in Lincoln, Nebraska. Things may be a little different.

Maybe that's the key to my good luck - staying the hell away from Quebec.
