oh it wouldn't, but bringing a gun to school isn't necessary anymore either. is that america changing or natural civil progress?

i'd paint it as more public hysteria fanned by the news media.

my dad used to hitchhike with his rifle to go deer hunting in the late 40's. can you imagine how well that would go over nowadays?

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

Probably better than if he was carrying a chainsaw!

I didn't realize pre-Columbine was considered "these days"...

What does a kid need to bring a gun to school for these days?

Besides protection from nut cases that kill their mother, then take her guns in order to kill as many children as possible in a primary school? Or besides a kid who felt he was bullied, so he brings a gun to school to start killing every one there? Or the former marine who places himself in tower on university grounds and starts randomly shooting at people?

I wish the world was such a place that those type of things don't happen, but I can't agree with the idea that saying no guns can be in schools stops those that wish to do harm from bringing a gun and doing harm. I don't know what the solution really is, but getting so carried away with thinking a gun ban keeps bad guys away that they ban even simulated actions of weapons is crazy. This gun ban (and ban of simulated weapons) in schools solution is like the young child that covers his eyes and thinks he's hiding. My daughter once got into trouble for violating the weapons ban because she had a nail clipper in her book bag.

So you think the answer to these issues (and they are valid issues) would be to arm all children? At what age should that start? Kindergarten? Send kids to school with their lunch boxes and a firearm? Should the teachers and staff be armed as well?

Nobody thinks that, though.

Rifles on back window gun racks were common at my high school as well. But that hardly compares to the injustice the poor kid in the OP suffered. Some school administration's rules these days are truly f'd up!

No, it really doesn't.

14 years ago isn't ancient history.

Not ancient history, but definitely not current either. If someone asked you what was in the news these days, you wouldn't say Columbine. Other than to, of course, compare one of the more RECENT school shootings to it.

I think my second comment said exactly that I don't know. I just know what they've been doing is foolish, but they're pushing for just more of the same today, only now its a call to ban guns they don't understand and are afraid of. Trained armed guards at schools might not be a bad idea. They might even be teachers that get the training and have the guns. But that again is just a band-aide to make people feel better. It might help protect students in schools, but armed violence is going on all over in society, by a very small portion of the population. What was so different 30 years ago that these type of things didn't happen? Even today we're shocked when it happens, but not as shocked as we were when Colombine occurred. 30 years ago we had less regulation and probably a higher percentage of homes with guns than we do today, but things like that didn't happen.

Amazing. Teachers get sh*t on in this country, don't get paid nearly enough, and now we want to arm and train them to protect our children as well. Who is going to pay for that? Who is going to pay for the armed guards in every school in this country? Teachers should start grabbing their text books and lesson plans, their bulletproof vests and their firearms before teaching grade 4 math.

Yeah. Definitely not the country I want to live in. And in other civilized countries, this kind of insanity isn't necessary. America is #1!

i completely agree that public hysteria/newsmedia is shaping some pretty off kilter views of america and humanity. the same hysteria that provokes some toward wanting guns banned, will provoke the 'arm everyone possible' view in another. hysteria is never rational.

i recently watched "craiglist joe" and i think that movie does a good job showing how much we're shorting ourselves by being so afraid of everyone. fear of strangers, fear of neighbors - growing up i was taught to be afraid of anyone who wasn't in my immediate family or a member of our church. it's an unnecessary fear of community, imo. but that might just be me. i'd rather perceive people as good until they give me reason to think otherwise.
