imagination and free play should definitely be encouraged. rewarded even. give that kid a real grenade!

If it could all be My Little Pony play, the world would be a better place.

I love a guy who looks like he could be on Criminal Minds as either an agent or a killer.

What if a child imagines driving a car at an unsafe speed through a residential area?

Most boring game ever.

Huh?

What kind of p*ssy parents sends their kid to a school named Mary Blair in the first place?

It's the parents problem, absolutely, choosing to send the child to such a mamby pamby school.

Minus Points for not warning the kid about it, prior.

I've driven an imaginary car through the Burger King drive thru once or twice. There was a bit of outside influence that came in a 12oz bottle and I wasn't really a kid at the time.

Absolutely crazy. I remember getting called into the kindergarten my daughter was in because she was making frog noises. Then I found out she was making them with a bunch of boys, but only she got in trouble because she was a girl, and boys do that kind of thing. I was like #######! I looked at the teacher and principal of the school, both women, and calmly told them I'm sorry we didn't raise our daughter with sexual stereotypes and tell her all the things she couldn't do because she was born a women. They both turned totally red faced and the principal walked out without saying another word. I think its just as wrong to try to turn boys into little girls today, but the schools seem to be trying to do it.

what does any of this have to do with schools turning boys into girls?

The boy is doing something just about every boy does, and he gets suspended for it. Heck I'm 53 and still throw imaginary grenades. This school is telling the boy its wrong to do things that are just plain common for boys to want to do. Maybe he's supposed to go dress up dolls or drink imaginary tea on the playground instead? The school my daughter went to attempted to force her to abide by their sexual stereotypes. This school is going even further and banning behaviors that are common in boys, and telling them they should be ashamed of those behaviors. Behavior that hurts others is wrong, using his imagination to pretend to be a hero is not hurting others, shaming him for doing so is.

I think you're reading way too much into this. While I agree that it's ridiculous he got suspended for it, I think it's quite the stretch to say they want him to be a girl and dress up and play with dolls.

throwing an imaginary grenade isn't a 'boy' behavior. i played army, heman, and soccer (at the time an all boy sport at recess, no official teams for girls were available) as a kid more than i played house. i wasn't a prissy girl but i wasn't a tomboy either. i was a kid having fun, playing. and that is the whole point! children should be encouraged to play freely and use their imaginations, boy or girl. this isn't about sexual stereotypes, imo - it's an example of misguided fear and excessive discipline stunting natural and necessary cognitive development.

My daughters would have been right there with him throwing the imaginary grenades. In particular the older one. We once had a baby sitter who freaked out because she tied up a Barbie when she was 4 or 5. The words she used was our child was evil because she hung Barbie in effigy. As if a child that young would even have any conception of the idea! She just liked tying things up with string, then pretending the hero would come and save them, or not. What a realist, sometimes the hero failed

Oh sorry. Free play ONLY if they're throwing grenades at each other and pretending to shoot each other up.

Man, you guys get really rustled over differing opinions.
