What is the best way to ship documents from Nigeria to the U.S.? I know my husband can ship items via FedEx, but are there any other options available? If so, what is the typical cost?

For documents for the NVC stage we used EMS Speedpost...Website Here

Once the documents arrived in the U.S., they were delivered to me via USPS. It cost him about $50.00.

EMS speedpost??? i would advice u dont use them, i sent a document to my husband and they said it would take 5 days to get there but it took 3 weeks and dat wasnt funny. The most reliable courier service dat i have used and know will deliver without delay are Fedex and DHL.

I'm still sort of confused about NVC documents.

I have our original wedding certificate here.

What other documents do I need from my Wife for NVC?

u will also need to include a birth certificate from the population commission of the state u were born, a photocopy of the biographic data page of your international passport, your police certificate and u may want to front load as well that is add copies of your emails, pictures, chat logs etc. Goodluck to u.

Don't forget the DS230 with only Part 1 signed, DS3032, and passport photos. I would also have your wife send you a Certified Copy of her Passport, W7, and signed letter to IRS requesting to treat your wife as a resident for 2012 if you were married last year so that you can apply for a TIN for her and file your taxes jointly.

My husband was able to get the Certified Copies from the Consulate in Lagos and they did not charge him the $50 bucks because they were going to be used to file taxes in the U.S.

Might as well kill as many birds with one stone as you possibly can.

I have signed DS230 (only part 1 signed) and 3032 (no dates on both) as well as passport photos. I also have the biographic page of her passport. The passport is in her maiden name and we did a change of name affidavit and newspaper announcement in Nigeria so I am oping that we won't have to get another passport.

We got married on Jan 5th this year and I am hoping that she will be here before I file this years taxes.

So it seems that I just have to get her original birth certificate from her (I have a copy, not certified). The police report is only good for 6 months so I think I will have to get that one later. But to confirm I will need to send the police report to NVC?

Thanks yah all.

Yes you would send the police report to NVC, and it's only good for 3 months...unless that has changed since 2011...

Also when you get ready to send everything make sure you send the original packet PLUS 1 copy of everything. I almost forgot to do this part.

The police report is good for 3months which is indicated on the report when they issue it to you...... Sometimes it gets expired before you are interviewed, the CO might ask for a new one, sometimes they don't, its advicable to get a new prior to the interview just incase the CO request for a new one.

after reading dwheels attempts of getting stuff out of Nigeria for DS-230 civil docs -

may I suggest?

you have a friend flying out of Nigeria into any other country? If so, ask the friend to pick up in Nigeria for you, remail/fedex out of that other country.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
