So my fiancé has his medical today and since we are both in Chile I went with him. The doctor gave him a paperwork and directions on where to receive his vaccinations. We went right after the medical and when everything was over the nurse said she didn't give him the flu shot Bc the doctor never requested it. I was told on vj before that the flu shot is a requirement so I called the doctor and he insisted it wasn't and that we are ok. My question is it is a requirement or not?

Well... the USCIS website says :

''Q:When does the flu season start for purposes of the seasonal flu vaccine requirement? Since the seasonal flu vaccine is required, do I have to get the seasonal flu vaccine if it is not the flu season?

A:For purposes of the immigration medical examination, the flu season starts on October 1 and ends on March 31 each year. If your immigration medical examination is during this period, you are required to have the seasonal flu vaccine. If you have an immigration medical examination completed between April 1 and September 30, when it is not the flu season for immigration purposes, you are not required to document that you have received the seasonal flu vaccine.''

I had my med exam for the K1 in May last year and the flu shot wasn't a requirement...however, I had to get it for my AOS in December. I think they will accept it as it is now since it's not flu season in Chile but they will require it in the US if he does his AOS before March 31

For those 6 months and older, the flu shot is required for AOS if it is flu season, Oct.- Mar. Yes, it was required.

Thank you both for your responses. We are going to do AOS in April. Will this affect his chances of getting a K-1 visa or does it only apply for AOS?

What happens if the foreign fiance cannot get his vaccination records? Would the doctor be able to assist with this? My fiance is also from Chile. We're running into that problem. My fiance lived in different countries through the years and the records either never followed or existed. He knows he's had the required ones like MMR and DTP, probably Polio and Heb B. He would have had his vaccinations done between 1981-1986.

Vaccinations required for AOS are MMR, Tdap(or TD), varicella(or a history of chickenpox), and the flu shot(only required during flu season). Here is the chart from the CDC that shows what is needed for AOS: http://www.cdc.gov/immigrantrefugeehealth/exams/ti/civil/vaccination-civil-technical-instructions.html#tbl1

Interesting question about the flu shot!

I don't get the season thing though. Would it be required during Chile's flu season time or the US flu season time? Since the seasons are opposite and whatnot.

I aked the doctor who is gonna make my medical exam today, she told me we are out of the flu season so I didn't need a flu shot. Are they are used to doing this (they must have several people a week) they probably know what the embassy will require at interview (someone on this forum went through the same doctor and got approved this week, and so many other before her... so I decided to believe her)

Good luck in your visa journey!

Don't worry about it Chile never gave anyone a vaccination worksheet until a few years ago. Your fiance will just have to have the vaccinations all over again that is what happened to my fiance. He got all of the vaccinations and then we got a paper from the Ministerio de Salud (ministry of health) saying what shots he received which were all the ones required for the K-1 visa. If they cannot give your fiance the shot again they will just test his blood. If you want you can send me a personal message and I will tell you more about the medical.

Good luck

Just in case anyone was wondering...

"K visa applicants are encouraged to get the vaccinations required under U.S. immigration law for immigrant visa applicants. Although such vaccinations are not required for K visa issuance, they will be required when adjusting status to that of legal permanent resident following your marriage. Applicants are therefore encouraged to fulfill these vaccination requirements at the time of the medical examination."

Hello all,

My Fiancé is from Mexico and will have his interview in a few months for the K-1 Fiancé visa. He will go for the medical exam, but we thought that maybe we could go to a local doctor to get at least some of the vaccinations ahead of time so he'd not being injected with a million all at once since the list is quite long. Does anyone know fi this is acceptable? Or do the vaccinations have to be from the US embassy doctor?

Thanks for your time.

Not only is it acceptable it's usually cheaper to do so. Just make sure he brings a print-out showing he's had shots done and when.

Since the change the influenza/flu shot requirement (in season) still catches a lot of civil surgeons out and they don't realise everybody needs them. I wasn't given mine and didn't realise at the time I sent my AOS off, but thankfully wasn't given the RFE for it despite the fact technically I should have.

Thank you! I'll be making an appt at a local doctor's office then! Best of Luck!
