Permanent Resident spouse and overseas assignements

Hello All,

Quick question...My wife and step-daughter are permanent residents. If i get orders overseas..say Japan. Can they travel with me to Japan with just a green card??

They need passports for their country of citizenship too if that what's you are asking...

Yeah..they have passports from the Philippines. I wasn't sure if there was an issue since they aren't citizens yet.

And you may be able to apply for expedited citizenship for them, which is what i'm doing at the moment since my husband received PCS orders to Germany.

Your tour would have to be over a year, which of course it would be if you were able to go accompanied anyway.

But yes, absolutely fine. Time on base counts as US soil. Their passports would be stamped with a SOFA visa.

As long as they have gone through their AOS then they can travel outside USA. They will need Japanese Visas to go there with you.

I'm in Japan with my husband now. No, you don't need Japanese visas for them.

What is needed is for them to be on your orders and for you to start on command sponsorship paperwork for them, and yes, you should try expediting naturalization. Trust me, it's difficult to find options for work here if you're not a US or Japanese citizen.
