Formalities incase of an extended stay

Hello,

Myself a permanent green card holder in USA. For some medical reason, I may be travelling to India and there is a chance that my stay over there may get extended for months. It would be nice if you can advice me on

(1) how long can an NRI be outside USA and

(2) On any formalities I need to do in advance before I plan for the trip, as I want to avoid any issues (at port of entry) while coming back to USA.

If you feel that your stay may be more than a year you can apply for a reentry permit before leaving.
