Confuse on SS number application

From what I understand K1 holder can apply 2 weeks after arrival and two weeks before expiration. My fiancee and the kids arrived Nov. 1 . We got married on Dec. 30, 2012.

Today Feb. 5 we went to apply for the SS number. According to the SS person that my wife and kids cannot apply for the SS number until she gets the I-551. I know I-551 is already the green card right?

What is the rule to apply the SS number?

Did we miss something?

yup, you missed I-94. it's the I-94 dates, not the K-1 visa dates.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

BTW would this also the effect of filing the AOS? My wife & kids are scheduled to appear for biometrics and photo this month. Maybe this might be the reason why she can't apply the SS number?

Appreciate help

@Darnell

So we have to wait for the Employment authorization or the green card whichever comes first?

The person was misinformed.

Yes you are allowed to get your social security card before the work permit.

bring your documents (listed on this page: http://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/ss5doc.htm)

to the closest Social Security Ofice and also print out this page:

https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0110211530

This is an oficial document from Social Security that lists all the aliens that are eligible to have a SSN.

Hope it helps.

Good luck!
