Hello all! Just have a quick question - I was at the bank today trying to change my name and they told me that my old driver's license ID was good from Canada, and that the certified marriage certificate was also great, but they were missing new state ID in my new name. As far as I know I can't get a WA driver's license until I have EAD and that is going to be a few months from now. She suggested trying to get a state ID card instead of a driver's license but it says I need to be a Washington resident.

Do you know if, as a K1 visa holder who has applied for AOS, there is anyway I can get some type of official ID in my new name?

I there any other place that would issue some type of ID in my new last name?

I'm kind of irritated - clearly I am who I say I am, and clearly I did get married to my husband so what's the big deal...

What are WA's rules for establishing residency? In CO you must get a job or have physical presence for 90 days. Not sure why they could not change your name using a valid ID and a marriage certificate. That is what the SSA and USCIS uses to change your SSC and GC--a valid passport and a marriage certificate. Might want to go back and ask for a manager as I have found most people in the banking system are clueless about anything complicated. You get all kinds of misinformation when you deal with them when a relative dies--BTDT. Of course you can wait until the EAD is issued and see what happens then, but I would go back as I always like a good fight.

Good luck,

Dave

Show up?

We had only been in the state 3 days before we were both issued WA driver's licenses. We used the address of the hotel we were staying at while looking for work and they were like "OK".

Looks like for state ID, they need a hard utility bill (electricity, water, gas) in your name showing the address you claim to live at if you don't have an SSN.
