WASHINGTONDuring opening statements for the first House Judiciary Committee hearing addressing comprehensive immigration reform, the top ranking Democrat on the committee urged his fellow members and the witnesses present to avoid using the phrase "illegal immigrant" during the daylong proceedings.

"I hope no one uses the term 'illegal immigrants' here today," said Committee Ranking Member John Conyers of Michigan. "Our citizens are not illegthe people in this country are not illegal. They are out of status. They're new Americans that are immigrants, and I think we can forge a path to citizenship that will be able to pass muster."

Tuesday's hearing is the first step in what's expected to be a complicated, months-long process, which will give members an opportunity to hear testimonies from a variety of experts on the issue.

A bipartisan group of eight senators last week unveiled a set of principles that they hope will serve as a blueprint for the bill in the Senate, while the House is working on its own version. Supporters of the issue hope to have a bill ready for a vote by summer.

We can't call illegal immigrants illegal immigrants? I shall continue to use the verbage come what may.

Agree, this post was just to show how the elected officials are more worried about ppl who have violated all the laws and regulation, while USC or perm holders have to go thru hoops and loops to bring their family member to US.

Even after they come to US its not easy, look at the post where ppl have hard time getting SSN or DL.

I suppose that's true. But to call them citizens is a little insulting. I came here legally and I'm no citizen.

calling people citizens when they don't have actual benefits of citizenship is empty political propaganda, to me.

Why are they called immigrants? They did not immigrate, they snuck in. We should call them undocumented invaders! That should please both left and right.

it's all relative. being a citizen of the us from birth, i'm descendent from the o.g undocumented invaders.

They are not immigrants. That is like saying a crack dealer is an "illegal pharmacist"

They are slaves held here to work cheaply for business to avoid all the payroll costs of providing decent workplaces. Perhaps they should be called "oppressed and enslaved" people. Or "Employer Cos Reduction" They are, in essence, the same as foreign workers that take American factory jobs because we made it cheaper to send materials overseas to be fabricated and returned here than just to make it here. Of course, service work has to be done here, and for that we outsource it to oppressed and enslaved people with no workplace protections.

Democrats support this practice just as they supported slavery and the segregation of blacks. When they could no longer do that to blacks, they destroyed the black family to assure they would have little chance of success and changed immigraqtion laws in 1965 to be more liberal toward Mexicans. Democrats replaced one underclass with another.

If Hispanic Americans would vote Republican, it would beDemocrats demanding a wall be built.

Democrats support this practice ...

Evidently. This is why Democrats are fighting tooth and nail doing everything in their power to derail Republican attempts to afford these "slaves" a path to become free, a path that would protect them from that exploitation. Oh, wait...
