if you have a appointment to get interview in the US Embassy, they will send you thru email . So if you are beneficiary, you don't need to worry about they will send you by mail. I hope it will help you :)

This depends of the embassy. You can check how appointments are taken for you embassy in the canada portal, just to make sure it is via email.

Good luck in your visa journey!

Would I even be able to visit him during the process without proof of a living place? If So, any chance I could go for many months So I'd at least have a place to stay?

Also, what are the current general wait times for Canada to US? I've tried looking and am just confused by the whole thing.

Thanks for any help.

HI ITL. First off, welcome to VJ. Everybody on this sight is very helpful. Secondly, do not go a lawyer route as that is expensive and it would not move your petition any quicker.

Filing a K1 application will take a great amount of patience especially the amount of waiting that you will be doing while your application is being processed. That is one thing to remember.

If I seem to remember correctly, all correspondence from USCIS went to my then fiancee (US citizen and petitioner). Getting a PO box would not hurt though.

If you are going to visit your fiancee just bring ties showing that you intend to return back to Canada like a letter from your employer stating your return date to work, any utility bills etc. I carried this with me every time I went to the US to visit my husband when we were engaged. I was always honest and truthful and always returned on the date that I told customs I was going back. Make sure that you also have a return ticket. USCIS border guys want to see that you have intent on returning and not staying illegally.

When you do file your paperwork and receive your notification (NOA1) take that with you as well to show that you have filed for a k1 visa.

Hope that this information helps you out. Sorry about your situation at home as that really sucks.

I just want to thank all of the wonderful responses I received. Sorry I didn't get back here sooner, I've been very busy.

The whole thing certainly did seem overwhelming when I've been researching it, but seeing the great information and helpful people here makes me feel a little bit more at ease about filing this ourselves. The comments about the lawyer idea does make sense, I guess, especially with the guides available to help us fill out the forms. I was so worried we would delay the process by filling out something wrong. Saving the money may be a better idea, after all. :)

I'm going to talk to my fiance about this site and see what he thinks. We hope to file while I visit him again, so it may be a month or so until the process gets started, but I will certainly be in touch here with any questions we come up with. It's also encouraging to see the success stories from some of the members here. :)

I will look into the PO box idea, as well, if needed. Don't really have anyone that I can use to receive my mail, so that may be helpful.

Did you have any issues getting your employer to give you a letter for this reason? I am a little nervous about telling them that I am planning to file for this, because it shows that I will be leaving (albeit in the distant future). It's only a part time job at McDonald's and I have great managers, but I am still nervous.

Thanks again, all.

Sarah
