Hello everyone

I have a quick question, I am getting my stuff ready to file for citizenship. My question is re: the middle name. When I got here my middle name was my mother's last name (after I got married). When I went to renew my passport, my embassy changed my middle name to my father's last name. which was my former last name prior to marriage.

Example:

Full Maiden Name Jane Lee (mother's maiden name) Roth (father's last name)

Got Married Jane Lee Johnson (husband's last name)

Passport Renewed Jane Roth Johnson

So, the question is: what do I put under Part I.A. full middle name, the middle name on my green card/ssn/driver's license? or the middle name on my passport?

Thanks for the info....in advance

What name do you want to have going forward? The name in your PI passport will be irrelevant as you will need to get a US passport. At naturalization you can legally change your name to anything you want without paying any legal fees. So I would put the name you want from this day forward.

Good luck,

Dave

actually this is the legal name I have now that they are asking for, totally different from the section where they ask what you want to change your name to. and I am not sure if they consider the PI passport name as my legal name or the name on my permanent residency card as my legal name....

Part A asks for your current legal name, so pick one that is one a government issued ID, Part B asks for the name on your GC, part C asks for all names you have used and from your post I can see at least 3 and part D is what name do you want to change it to should it be different than what you are currently using. Your legal name is any name listed on any government issued document--i.e. DL, GC, passport, SSC, etc. (and that is the reason for part C). For example, my Mother had her legal name listed on her DL as Middle Maiden Married, but her SSC was always First Middle Married. All bank accounts were in Middle Maiden Married. To handle this she had a section in her will that has the also known as (AKA) and all her legal names listed.

For your case pick one. I would pick the one you want to use going forward and stick to it. Picking the name on the GC, DL and SSC might be the easiest, but is that the name you want to use?

Hi, I just want to share what I had experience when I applied for Naturalization. I followed wot was in my Green Card. The only thing that concerns me now is that if I'll apply for dual citizenship my US and Phil. Passports wont have the same Middle Names. Since I've been using my Mother's maiden name as my Middle Name now that I am married. Good luck on your application!

I have the same concern. The airlines are so picky about having the passport name match with the name on the ticket. What happens if the American passport and Brazilian passport are different due to leaving out a middle name on the American passport? USCIS shortened the full middle name to just a middle initial on the green card even though all of the forms showed the complete name. Will they do that on the naturalization certificate as well, or will they use whatever we request?

Never was very strong on this subject, common in my wife's home country to insert her maiden name in front of her married name, and with kids, to use their fathers name followed by their mother's maiden name as part of their last name.

It was she that elected to drop her maiden name on her N-400, because in this country, only leads to confusion. Not even a second thought with her IO, SS, or the DOS by dropping that extra redundant name.

This name dropping already had to be done for credit cards, banking, home deed, her driver's license, and joint vehicle ownership, only field space for a first, middle, and a married last name, not enough space for a full paragraph. So her certificate just listed these three key names as does her US passport, SS card. And finally her name in our phone book follows my name and only requires one line, not two.

Just saying, no problem in dropping those extra names. I feel the reason they do this in other countries, in particular in Latin America, they only have a handful of last names so need more than one so they can know the difference between two different people. But even at that, can find thousands with the same two last names.

also middle name in the states is not your mom or dads last name.. if you have 2 names like me, say rj or raul jason, jason then becomes your middle name.. don't get middle name and middle initial confused.. i know in the philippines we don't use middle name but middle initial which is your mom's last name..

so on your us passport, you technically don't have a middle name.. just jane johnson

also, don't forget to correct your name on your ssn and drivers license after naturalization (you need to go anyway to social security office to let them know you are now a us citizen) .. i had to since my middle name before was my mom's last name.. i had to drop it and put my correct middle name..
