After trying on 2 separate occasions to get my mother in law here on a tourist visa, we succeded on her application to come here with a green card. At her interview in the US Embassy in El Salvador, they said that everything had been settled by the US Visa Center. They did not want to see any evidence or ask any questions. All they wanted was her passport and she gets that back next week with the visa attached. We tried to get her here twice before, but she was told that poor people do not get to visit the US. Apparently, the Embassy thought she would desert her husband of 40 years and the 2 remaining children living at home that were going to college. Her husband, (my father in law) passed last Spring and that is when we decided to sponsor her. I am amazed at the ease the process has been and how easy it has been to deal with the US Visa Center. They were very prompt in sending us emails in "government legalese"," hey we are waitng.... to process your application as quickly as possibile"

My very well-to-do B-I-L tried for a tourist visa in ES and he got denied. IDK why because he has a great job, a lot of money and many family ties to ES.

5/15/12: RFE (daughter's birth cert)

More like "people from poor countries." My husband, before he was my husband, was denied 3 times for a tourist visa and he owned his home, owned his business, etc etc. Now his kids have been denied as well! They told us it was BECAUSE my husband is living here now, that they are presumed to be intending to immigrate. So we did everything by the books, immigrated my husband here the long and expensive proper way, but they still accuse us of trying to circumvent immigration law... anyway, different topic ... my husband did get approved once, on his third try, so sometimes they just make you try over and over until the tourist visa is mysteriously granted.

Interview - APPROVED 175 days from NOA-1 date
ROC - 2010-2011
October 5 - I-751 sent APPROVED 111 days from NOA-1 date, no interview.
NATURALIZATION - 2012
APPROVED 79 days.
May 9 - Oath ceremony - in Oakland, CA.

March 19 - Sent e-mail Choice of Agent, without scan of DS-3032. Paid AOS fee ($88).
April 1 - Choice of Agent information accepted (10th "working day" to accept).
April 3 - IV invoice appeared. Paid IV fee ($230).
April 11 - Sent IV package and AOS package TOGETHER. Confirmed delivery April 15.

April 26 - Case Complete (10th working day)

May 14 - Interview date assigned (12th working day)

June 5 - Interview in Sofia - VISA GRANTED!!!

June 16 - POE @ SFO. No problems. He's a citizen now!

Oct 4 - US Passport received. (SS card received some time in the summer; had to go to SSA office to obtain)

The fact that poor people can't visit the U.S makes me angry! Rich, poor, whatever they're still my family and they should have the equal amount of fairness to apply for a visa. I want to invite my cousin over to my place here in CA, but apparently he can't because he's poor. That really messes with his mind too, because he got to come here when he was a minor but left for school. Now he's 29 and wants to visit again, but he feels very hopeless. He's just a normal guy working a normal minimum wage job.
