Welcome ! Do you have any great moose recipes?

Moose can be used just like beef. When I lived in Fairbanks I had moose often. Best tasting meat in my opinion! We have moose here in the UP, I even had one walk right up my boat launch after swimming across the lake! Not much opportunity to eat any moose here though, there are too few to have any legal hunting.

We have a lot of them here, and a legal hunting season. Huge animals! We have the Quebec-Labrador variety which are the second largest, in addition to quite a few deer. You do NOT want to hit one with your car. Unlike deer, if you hit a moose, there is a very good chance both the driver and the moose will not survive. It often involves more than bent sheet metal.

There is a large swamp area, (the Winooski river delta, actually) north of downtown Burlington, and south of our home. We drive through it almost every day and there are many moose there. One occasionally gets a wild hair and decides to take a walk through downtown or the UVM campus. That is always good for a news report (nothing much else happens here)

Last fall there was a black bear that decided to have lunch in the UVM trash dumpsters. They make life interesting and they even showed up in Pasha's essays for college entrance applications in his description of how he "came to this place where wild animals wander in the streets"

Alla's first "encounter" with a bear resulted in her running back to the car at the speed of sound and locking me OUT. The bear was laughing also. I walked to the car and she said "Sorry, I had to save myself" I also have to sleep toward the window in our bedroom with her "behind me" in case a bear comes in the window (2nd floor) she will push me into the jaws of the man-eating beast and make good her escape! :o

I have had numerous encounters with wild animals. As a wildlife photographer, we become intimately involved and very close to the animals. Knowledge is key to understand the animal the the signs they exhibit. Occasionally, one misses the clues and the result is not pretty. Nevertheless, I have been kissed two times by a moose, once in Utah and the second time in Grand Teton. Moose have poor eyesight, if you are very still they will eventually come up to investigate you. They put their nose so close to you face it is like a kiss. Very tender.

I am sure Olga will kiss much better than a moose. My trip is planned for April 30 with arrival May 1 at DME Moscow 6 pm. I can almost feel my first hug and kiss.

I watched a video taken on a university campus in Canada. A moose had wandered onto the campus and was loitering near a sidewalk while he was being videotaped from a safe distance. A student tried to casually walk past the moose, giving it a space of 10-15 feet at least. The moose didn't like that and ran at this person and knocked him down. It turned away but then came back and stomped the victim. This happened several more times, all the while being filmed. When the moose was finished the victim was dead! :wow:

I have been very close to moose in the past also but no 'kissing'! Since seeing that video I will never again get that close!

Good luck on your Mayday in Moscow!

You sure those weren't the local girls? I was in Montana once, and I am sure some of those girls had been miscounted in aerial surveys as moose.

Sorry Gary, I know a moose when I see one, especially from 2 inches away.

Good thing we ban sugary drinks from college campi to protect the students.

Too bad the guy with a camera didn't have a GUN and he could only stand by and film another person being killed...but it was Canada so...no. Another killing in a gun free zone. That stuff doesn't happen in Vermont

Sorry, couldn't resist. :P

People do not seem to understand the concept of wild animals. Even if the animal has ventured into town, it is still very wild (in fact, more wild because of limited escape routes and unfamiliar territory). When I was in Far East Russia, a Japanese Photographer was eaten by bears. It was all over the news like it was some surprising thing. Bears hibernate for 6 months, when they come out of hibernation, they are starving. In early spring, there is little food so a photographer is a good snack. If one wants to photograph bears, it is best to do it in August or September during the salmon runs. Bears are well fed and more interested in fish than humans.

Yah, but from aerial surveys it can be easy to mix them up with girls in the Northeast Kingdom. (The NE area of Vermont, mostly populated by moose)

We call them "woodchucks", The Vermont equivilent of Rednecks. A guy at work, our company accounting chief, came in wearing his Carhart pants and the ubiquitous black/red plaid wool shirt...AND black rim glasses. I said "you look like a clever woodchuck, one that can actually tell you how much wood a woodchuck can chuck"

Vermont humor.
